The candidate will be involved in:

  • Development, evaluating, comparing and applying bioinformatics based NGS; data-analysis pipelines, algorithms and annotation tools for a variety of research and diagnostic projects
  • Informing on the design and implementation of new features for sequencing data analysis and storage of sequencing data
  • Co-supervision of PhD students and interns
  • Developing new research ideas and (co)-applying for grants
  • Processing and quality control of WGS / metagenomics data
  • Comprehensive analysis of (largely) sequence data sets from a variety of platforms
  • Automation of data-analysis pipelines and algorithms
  • Participating in teaching of (under)graduate students

Requirements

We offer a challenging position within a dynamic and stimulating research environment and ask for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and pro-active team-player with:

  • A PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, human microbiota, microbial ecology or equivalent;
  • Experience in computational bioinformatics and/or biostatistics within an NGS setting (data assemblage, analysis and annotation);
  • Practical knowledge of NGS algorithms and available resources for microbiological bioinformatics;
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++, Java, Perl, or Python;
  • Experience in statistical computing environments such as R;
  • Understanding of human disease biology and/or microbiology;
  • Ability to prioritize and balance competing demands;
  • Experience in machine learning and handling of multi-omics data, including metabolomics, is a plus.

Conditions of employment

Salary
Depending on education and experience, you will be offered a suitable salary in accordance with the Cao umc.

Contract
It concerns a temporary appointment for specific work of 3 years for an average of 36 hours per week in accordance with art. 2.4.3 of the Cao umc.

Working conditions
The Cao university medical centres (umc) is applicable to this function.

About the department
The Department of Medical Microbiology (Maastricht University Medical Centre+) is looking for a postdoc in the computational analyses of metagenome and microbial WGS data.
The Maastricht UMC+ is an exciting, interdisciplinary university medical center with excellent facilities and leading research groups in, amongst others, systems biology (MACsBio), molecular imaging (M4I), (meta)genomics, next-generation sequencing and molecular epidemiology. The Department of Medical Microbiology has a strong focus on the study of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, molecular typing and the human microbiome using WGS and metagenomics data. The lab has on-site automated sample processing as well as next-generation sequencing facilities.

Our research group has strong links with clinical departments (e.g. gastroenterology, pulmonology and pediatrics) within the Maastricht UMC+ as well as many (inter)national collaborations with academic and industrial partners within the context of multiple (inter)national consortia, including the Top Institute Food and Nutrition (TIFN), NWO- Carbohydrate Competence Center, Joint Programme Initiatives HDHL Intestinal Microbiomics and the Interreg i-4-1health project.
