We are looking for an enthusiastic Postdoc in the area of human-computer interaction, human factors or design for (automated) vehicles to support our team of HCI / human-factors researchers at Industrial Design. It is a flexible position for up to 24 months, with a part-time of 0.8 fte being negotiable. Since the project has already started with 3 PhDs in this area, we ask the Post-Doc to start as soon as possible, latest November 2019.
The Future Mobility Team at the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is currently looking for an enthusiastic PostDoc candidate for the human factors project within the larger multidisciplinary i-Cave programme (NWO Perspectief programme run by TU/e (
https://www.i-cave.nl).
The i-Cave programme addresses automated and cooperative driving in urban environments, and will develop and evaluate cars that can drive in automated mode, and even autonomously, and can also be driven by a human driver. These vehicles will be tested in a Living Lab at the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology, and the programme will end with a large demonstration. The Human Factors project within i-Cave will design and evaluate interaction aspects between the automated vehicle and the human user (drivers and other road users, e.g., pedestrians). Currently, research for this subproject is done through one PhD project at Eindhoven University of Technology (focus on interaction between other road users and automated cars), and two PhD projects at the University of Twente (focus on driver trust, feelings of safety and on switching control between automation and the driver).
As a PostDoc you will primarily work in the project team dealing with Human Factors, which is a team of HCI/Human Factors researchers, PhD students, and Industrial Design/Interaction Design students on user aspects of automated vehicles. Specifically, you will be the linking pin with the rest of the i-Cave project, build on the team's existing research within the context of automotive user interfaces, and integrate the results from the running PhD projects. In the i-Cave programme, we collaborate with parties such as industry (a.o. TomTom, Ford, Segula, Mapscape, AutomotiveNL), research, consultancy and societal organisations (a.o. TNO, ANWB, Wittenveen+Bos). In addition, there will be room for adding individual contributions to the overall project.
Your tasksThe objective of this postdoc position is to contribute to the i-Cave project by linking the human factors PhD projects to the overall i-Cave project, integrate the results of the PhD projects, and extend them through your own individual research contributions. The focus will lie on supporting the team in developing interface concepts and prototypes, designing and conducting your own experiments, publishing the results and integrating them towards the overall project goal. In addition, you will support and contribute to the positioning and public outreach of the research and communicating of that positioning externally to make the results visible and support valorization of the findings, including helping set up the final event and promote our work to the outside world in this final demo. In addition, you will help to identify ideas for follow-up projects and identify consortium partners to tackle national (NWO), European (e.g. Horizon 2020) and international grant applications (Trans-Atlantic Platforms). This includes assisting the team in maintaining the network in automotive user interfaces / human factors through partner scoping and visits, and help organize partner seminars and workshops.
