The Informatics Institute is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position (4 years) in the field of computer vision and in particular automatic visibility enhancement using deep learning. Visibility in outdoor environment can be adversely affected by various weather conditions and consequently degrade the performance of computer vision algorithms. Visibility enhancement is therefore essential.

The overall research requires a combination of computer vision and machine learning activities. The research conducted by the University of Amsterdam is mainly in the field of computer vision to develop deep learning methods to automatically perform visibility enhancement in outdoor scenes.

In this position you will do research under the supervision of Assistant professor Dr Shaodi You within the Computer Vision group of the Informatics Institute.

What are you going to do?

The overall aim of the position is to develop a series of computer vision algorithms and technologies for visibility enhancement. It is also expected that you will pursue a PhD degree. In aim of that, you will need to thoroughly understand the task, the existing approaches and propose cutting edge solutions.

In detail, you need to propose solutions for computer vision algorithms which are adversely affected by rain, haze, fog, snow, etc. This includes a range of skill sets across physics, geometry, optics and sensor, image processing, computer vision and machine learning. Good coding skills for deep learning and image processing is also essential.

• A Master by Research Degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Information System, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a closely related field;
• a strong scientific expertise in computer vision, image processing and machine learning is preferred, reflected among others by publications;
• good programming skills, programming experience in image processing, computer vision and deep learning is preferred;
• a good academic record;
• fluency in English, both written and spoken. Good communication skills and willingness to cooperate with colleagues.

Fixed-term contract: Four years.

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting at 1 March 2020 for the duration of 18 months. After a satisfactory evaluation your contract will be extended for a total duration of 4 years. You will get a customized Training and Supervision Plan, that will be evaluated every year.

The salary will be €2,325 to €2,972 (scale P) gross per month, based on fulltime (38 hours a week), exclusive 8 % holiday allowance and 8.3 % end-of-year bonus. A favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies.

Faculty of Science – Institute for Logic, Language and Computation

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 6,500, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. The mission of the Informatics Institute is to perform curiosity-driven and use-inspired fundamental research in Computer Science. The main research themes are Artificial Intelligence, Computational Science and Systems and Network Engineering. Our research involves complex information systems at large, with a focus on collaborative, data driven, computational and intelligent systems, all with a strong interactive component.

The Computer Vision group is directed by Prof. Theo Gevers and conducts research in theories, representation models and computational methods which are essential for (3D) image and video understanding. Members of the group participate in teaching for the international (research) Master Artificial Intelligence and contributes to various Bachelor and Master programmes within the UvA.
