Job description

We are looking for a Research Data Manager to complement our current team of Research Data Managers at the Utrecht University Library. The data manager will mainly be involved in various research projects on a temporary basis and/or will work on a more general level at our faculties.


Good data management practice, based on the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) is essential for the use and reuse of research data. You will work on data management issues during every phase of the data cycle. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of research data in all its forms, so that the data can be used and reused optimally. At a detailed level, you will work on complex data(processing) issues, and, if necessary, provide input to improve processes or systems. You will assist researchers in planning the collection, management and publication of data, both in new and ongoing projects. You will be co-responsible for creating your own assignments, and preferably you will work on two or three assignments simultaneously.


The data manager is part of the multidisciplinary Research Data Management Support team, a broad network of data experts within Utrecht University and Utrecht University Medical Centre. Together with colleagues you will work on the development of a joint portfolio of services.
 

Depending on the projects you are working on, you will:

  • take the lead in establishing short-term and long-term contacts with researchers to discuss data management issues and acquire new projects;
  • support researchers in writing a Data Management Plan and setting up workflows for the project before collecting the research data;
  • assist in the collection, management and sustainable storage and/or publication of research data. Your careful administration of the data complies with the relevant laws and regulations. You will work according to agreements and contracts with data and source system managers, and keep account of and manage relevant formal documents;
  • advise researchers on the careful handling of research data, including privacy sensitive data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and on procedures and technical aspects that are important for the quality of the (meta)data;
  • create tools to help with automated data management processes, to help advise on improving the data architecture and help implement improvements or expansions where necessary.

Requirements

  • professional and intellectual capacities at a higher educational level and affinity with an academic working environment;
  • at least two years of relevant work experience in a data management context. You know how to work with research data and/or privacy sensitive data, for example through experience in setting up databases, managing data and/or large databases, or you are willing to master these processes;
  • knowledge and experience with methods and techniques for processing scientific data or willing to train yourself. This means that, in addition to the necessary technical knowledge, you are familiar with topics such as metadata and securing provenance and audit trail;
  • knowledge of and experience with a data processing tool and/or database management systems such as R, Python, SPSS, MS Access, (T)SQL and/or PL/SQL is an advantage. As well as the willingness to learn new tools or techniques.
  • strong advisory and organizational skills, creative in finding suitable solutions, excellent communication skills, and an excellent level of English.


Moreover, this position requires personal skills such as learning ability, customer orientation, analytical ability, result orientation, organizational sensitivity and networking skills.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (0.8 FTE) for the period of one year with the prospect of an extension for a permanent position, subject to a positive performance evaluation. A laptop and smartphone are included in the package. You will work in a dynamic environment in which personal and job related development is encouraged and facilitated. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €2,709 and €4,274 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
