Job description

University Fellow and Teacher in the field of macro-economics
Are you passionate about teaching? Do you want to take responsibility for the coherence and quality of the track (set of courses) in economics, and do you like to work in a Liberal Arts and Science setting? Then this is an ideal opportunity to join the teaching team at University College Utrecht (UCU). Teaching at UCU takes place on a residential student-campus in small-scale and interactive classes (maximally 28 students per course). Students have a background and interest in multiple disciplinary fields and therefore pursue their own tailor-made degree program, graduating with a BSc or Ba-diploma.
Currently we are looking for an experienced academic teacher and fellow in the field of economics or political economy, preferably with an educational qualification equivalent or similar to BKO. At the moment our small team of economics teachers consists of experts in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and public sector economics. Our particular aim is to create a team with more diverse knowledge, and as such we are searching for candidates with a broad background in economics and political economy and, more specifically, expertise in macro- and international economics, institutional economics, or multidisciplinary economics. The candidate should also have expertise in current-day economic research. The fellow-teacher is responsible for preparing our economics students for master programs, but (s)he should also be able to enthuse and instruct non-economics students for the discipline.

As the Economics Fellow you are responsible for the coherence and quality of the track at UCU. Together with the team of economics teachers, and in collaboration with other disciplinary fields in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities, you are expected to bring the economics track in line with UCU’s curriculum renewal. Moreover, you are responsible for the educational framework within which students work on their Bachelor research thesis in economics, including finding supervisors for the theses. As Fellow you work in close cooperation with Utrecht School of Economics (U.S.E.). As a teacher at UCU, you teach courses at the intermediate and advanced bachelor level, and supervise a number of Bachelor research theses, notably in macro- or international economics.

  • have teaching experience, preferably for several years and in interdisciplinary teaching settings, notably in macro- and international economics at intermediate and advanced level;
  • are enthusiastic to teach in a Liberal Arts and Science setting;
  • are enthusiastic to collaborate with teachers and students outside of the field of economics;
  • are fluent in English (spoken and written).

The candidate is expected to devote 20% of their contract time on economic research, which finds its connection to one of the U.S.E. research domains.

Conditions of employment

This is a position of 0.7-1.0 FTE for the duration of four years. The minimum gross salary is € 2,790 and the maximum gross salary is € 5,127 (scale 10 or 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment. The gross salary depends on previous qualifications and experience, and as such will be in scale 10 or 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities).
Besides that, you will receive a holiday allowance of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %.
