Job description

Are you an aspiring researcher, looking to start your academic career off well-prepared? As a junior lecturer / PhD candidate, you will not only be contributing fundamental scientific knowledge in the domain of psychology, but also teach this knowledge to students in the psychology programme. This way, you will be able to obtain both your PhD and university teaching qualification in one position.

The School of Psychology and Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) at Radboud University are looking for a Junior Lecturer/PhD Candidate in Developmental Psychology. You will have teaching duties (40%) and research duties (60%) for a 6-year period. The position will ultimately lead to a PhD degree and university teaching qualification (BKO). We have similar openings in Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, and Work and Organisational Psychology (see the relevant job advertisements on our website).

Your teaching will involve various activities in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Psychology, mostly related to 1) tutoring research-related work groups in the first year of the Bachelor’s programme, 2) supervising third-year students during their Bachelor’s degree research projects, which will align with your own PhD research, 3) supervising Master’s theses in the Master’s programme in Healthcare Psychology. Over the course of six years, you will gain diverse teaching skills, including lecturing. This will enable you to obtain your university teaching qualification under the guidance of a mentor.

You will be part of BSI’s Social Development research programme. You will be enrolled as a PhD candidate in the BSI Graduate School, which will support your research and training. Because of the strong link between research and teaching in this position, your research topic should aim to inspire and trigger the interests of students so that you will be able to supervise their Bachelor’s and Master’s theses on your topic.

You will develop your own research topic working closely together with other participants in the Social Development programme. Your research should fit in well with our current research lines and ongoing projects. One excellent option is to link your research to our ongoing longitudinal studies (Nijmegen Longitudinal Study, Kandinsky Longitudinal Study). We are very interested in PhD candidates who will be able to collaborate on these projects. Another possibility is to link up with any of our other projects. Other current projects and priorities are: development of emotion regulation in social context (parents, peers); childhood trauma in family context and social cognitive functioning; effectiveness of personalised behavioural or addiction treatments for young adults; reducing aggression and promoting prosocial behaviour using the Alles Kidzzz intervention; social safety at schools (VOS project, including implicit processes in children and teachers and physical proximity in the classroom); peer influence and adaptive/maladaptive behaviours in various contexts (including social media); development of computerised or non-computerised sociometric methods for the 21st century. We are open to other ideas that align with our current projects and expertise.

Employer

Strategically located in Europe, Radboud University is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. A place with a personal touch, where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful green campus, in modern buildings with state-of-art facilities. You will be appointed at the School of Psychology and the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), both in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The School of Psychology currently offers excellent education programmes to approximately 1,800 students. Each year, our Bachelor's programme welcomes approximately 500 new students. The Master's degree programme in Psychology has three specialisations that prepare students for an academic or professional career: Work, Organisation and Health; Behaviour Change; and Healthcare Psychology. The School of Psychology offers two Research Master’s programmes: Behavioural Science (in collaboration with the Behavioural Science Institute) and Cognitive Neuroscience (in collaboration with the Donders Institute). We approach teaching as a team science endeavour and offer lecturers of the future training with a strong basis in both teaching and research. This Junior Lecturer/PhD Candidate position is part of this policy.

You will conduct research within the Social Development programme. We conduct fundamental research on social and emotional development, mostly from early childhood to young adulthood. As we are developmental scientists, much of our research is longitudinal. We focus on the influence of social context on development (parents, peers, schools or social media) in interaction with individual differences in traits and behaviours (e.g. emotional regulation). We also conduct applied research on the causes and treatment of psychopathology in young adults (e.g. trauma, addiction, aggression, anxiety, depression), and on children’s and adolescents’ social functioning at schools. Our mission is to contribute new knowledge to developmental science that will also be relevant to clinical and educational practice and that will benefit positive youth development.

The Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) is a multidisciplinary research institute and one of three research institutes in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. Our researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science, and communication science. Our mission is to strengthen people through understanding the foundations of human behaviour, by creating synergy between different paradigms and by facilitating craftsmanship, curiosity and connection in scientific research. BSI has seven research programmes covering three major research themes: 1) development and learning, 2) health and mental health, and 3) social processes and communication. BSI conducts fundamental as well as applied/translational research and has excellent facilities and support for lab and field research.
