For the International Institute for Social History we are looking for a Junior data engineer (4/5 days, 32-38 hr/w).

Job description

Position and embedding

The Data & Collections Engineer will derive (meta-)data from IISG's and other collections to further the findability of collections as well as to create research ready datasets. The engineer will help transpose (meta-)data to Linked Open Data and provides support in collections and research projects to derive new datasets. Finally the data engineer will engage activities to update yearly time series data, such as the Amsterdam Code, HISCO and other value lists.

The position of Data & Collections Engineer is a new position within the recently established Data & Augmentation Department. It is of major importance, as it furthers the outreach of collections and ensure the (re-)usability of research datasets and because the Data & Collections engineer furthers the FAIRness of both collections and research data.

Key tasks
  • clean, convert and standardize datasets
  • created Linked Data representations of datasets
  • store datasets in repository software
  • advocate the use of datasets, e.g. through presentations, demonstrations and blog posts
  • collaborate with both researchers and other engineers with the purpose of creating new or enhancing existing datasets

Requirements

Key competences
  • Proficiency in Python, or demonstrated ability to translate experience from an equivalent language (e.g. R)
  • Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency in English verbal and written communication skills
Preferred competences
  • Bachelor or Master's degree in relevant field (e.g. history, digital humanities, sociology, information sciences)
  • Experience with Linked Open Data
  • Experience with data management systems such as Dataverse
Appointment
The appointment concerns an employment contract of 0.8 - 1 FTE for a period of two years. The start date is September 15, 2022, but the exact start date is negotiable.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 jaar.

Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is EUR 3.098,- and the maximum salary is EUR 4.257,- gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 9 CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP. The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions.
