Job description

Boiling and condensation play a very important role in many industrial processes involving heat transfer. Application can be found in power generation, cooling & refrigeration systems and internal combustion engines. At small scale boiling and condensation can be studied in great detail by Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). Within the Delft University of Technology soft- and hardware tools are available for such detailed studies.

The goals of the present project are to:

  • Further develop and validate DNS sub-models for bubble coalescence and breakup in an in-house DNS code;
  • Develop and validate DNS sub-models for interfacial heat and mass transfer in an in-house DNS code for bubbly flows;
  • Further develop and validate the existing DNS sub-models for boiling which are available in the in-house DNS code;
  • Perform DNS simulations of convective turbulent boiling flows for both laboratory and reactor conditions, and analyse the effect of the different conditions on the convective turbulent boiling flow structures.
  • Develop models that can be used in an industrial setting.

This work will be executed in a co-operation with the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group NRG in The Netherlands

Department

Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

From chip to ship. From machine to human being. From idea to solution. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment and discover its underlying mechanisms, research and education at the 3mE faculty focusses on fundamental understanding, design, production including application and product improvement, materials, processes and (mechanical) systems.

3mE is a dynamic and innovative faculty with high-tech lab facilities and international reach. It’s a large faculty but also versatile, so we can often make unique connections by combining different disciplines. This is reflected in 3mE’s outstanding, state-of-the-art education, which trains students to become responsible and socially engaged engineers and scientists. We translate our knowledge and insights into solutions to societal issues, contributing to a sustainable society and to the development of prosperity and well-being. That is what unites us in pioneering research, inspiring education and (inter)national cooperation.
