NIDI invites applications for a postdoc position in the Horizon Europe project PREMIUM_EU.

PREMUM_EU seeks to answer the question how European migration, between countries and within countries between regions, can contribute to the development of vulnerable regions in Europe. It will develop a Regional Policy Dashboard for national and regional policy makers, to help them in the formulation of new feasible policies aimed at the potential of migration to enhance the development of vulnerable regions.

The postdoc will work on the intersection of modelling of regional migration and regional development, on the basis of existing and new-to-be collected and estimated time series of migration and existing regional data. The resulting integrated models will aim at identifying the role of policy interventions in regional development, which is explicitly conceptualized as multi-dimensional, incorporating economic, social and cultural dimensions.

Job description
The successful applicant has a strong quantitative background, particularly in migration modelling and pooled cross-sectional and time series data structures. The researcher also needs to be familiar with migration theories and regional development literature. At the same time, modelling is a means, not an end in this project, since it should feed into the policy component of the project. The postdoc will work together with the coordinator, but should be able to make choices independently as well. Frequent interaction with other European partners n the project is important as well.

Requirements

• A PhD in demography, economics, economic geography, statistics, or similar discipline
• Knowledge of migration literature and regional development literature
• Creativity in modelling complex processes
• A good feeling of the policy dimensions of the models
• Very good command of English
• Ability to work in an international team of researchers
  

Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is € 3.557 and the maximum salary is € 4.670 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 10 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.

The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions. For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).

Applicants from abroad are required to relocate to The Netherlands. NIDI will apply for the necessary permits but employee is required to handle the immigration themselves. Non-Dutch nationals may be eligible for a substantial tax break (30% ruling).

About NIDI
The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is a leading European demographic research institute. NIDI is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and affiliated with the University of Groningen. It is located in the center of The Hague providing a unique and stimulating research environment in the broad field of population studies. Migration & Migrants

Why do people migrate? And what international migration flows does this produce? Migration plays an important role in (re)shaping societies. It changes the population structure of the country and has important consequences for individual lives. We study the antecedents and consequences of migration and aim to provide insight into potential future migration patterns. We are interested in how the lives of migrants and their children unfold over time and pay specific attention to the (intergenerational) relationships and demographic behavior of migrants, for example by studying if and when migrants and their children marry, give birth, or move to a new home. Most of our research takes a comparative perspective and focuses on Europe.

What are we working on?

We are currently involved in the development of migration scenarios in two European Horizon2020 projects, the CrossMigration project and the Quantifying Migration Scenarios for Better Policy project (QuantMig). In the ERC funded project MYMOVE, we focus on how moving in childhood influences later life outcomes of those with and without a migrant background. In addition, two other projects compare the life courses of migrants and non-migrants. One focuses on the experience of insecure employment for demographic choices and the Finally, the project The Multicultural Drama in Perspective project zooms in on the family formation of the second generation in the Netherlands.
