Job description

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences is eager to help the society in decision making regarding actions that needs to be taken in view of climate change, energy transition, limited resource supply. These changes comes with extremely complex scientific and engineering questions, that can only be solved with the combined expertise of a multidisciplinary team.

Such a team is for instance the Mudnet academic network, where members study clayey systems (‘mud’)  from the perspective of different disciplines.  Within the faculty, four members are involved in Mudnet, two from the department of Hydraulic Engineering and two from the department of Geosciences & Engineering. One of the core tasks of Mudnet is to better understand the complex properties of clay/water systems in many different settings and help stakeholders to develop sustainable and circular solutions in mud-related projects. Projects that Mudnet members work on range from assessing the rheological properties of fluid mud in harbours to understand the ripening of dredged material used for land reclamation. A major part of the activities performed by the Mudnet team is connected to measurements, both in the laboratory and in the field. Those experiments are crucial as the parameters measured serve as input for the predictive models the team is developing.

It is foreseen that the line of research “Building with soft soils”  will become increasingly important over the coming years. In addition, the new MSc cross-over module “Suspensions, sludges and soils”  that is currently being developed requires supervision for the laboratory activities that will be performed by the students. It is henceforth anticipated that a strong support in lab and field activities is required. This support should be provided by the highly qualified technician we are looking for.

The candidate should be acquainted with multidisciplinary research and have enough experience to be immediately operational in the existing lab. Furthermore, the candidate should

  • hold a PhD in either physics, chemistry, biophysics or biochemistry,
  • have experience in the fields of optics, acoustics and electro kinetics,
  • have sufficient background knowledge in biochemistry to safely operate in a lab where clayey material of different nature are handled,
  • be able to design, construct and maintain related equipment and setups,
  • coordinate lab activities with staff, students and technicians, supervised is very complex and diverse and requires the integration of disciplines.
  • train and advise colleagues and students that require to work on a specific equipment,
  • ensure availability of up-to-date documentation and software related to equipment,
  • Initiates and makes well-founded proposals with a view to innovation
  • have (and build) a professional network within the field of lab and in-situ equipment,
  • possess excellent coding skills (Python, Matlab, Fortran) and be able to create user-friendly interfaces for newly designed equipment,
  • be fluent in Dutch and English,
  • integrate easily in a friendly multi-cultural team.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

  • A salary according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology.
