Job description

The Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance of the University of Groningen is looking for a Career Track Assistant Professor in Energy Economics.

We are looking for candidates with an interest in (interdisciplinary) research related to energy transition and climate change in the broadest sense, such as the design of governmental support schemes to promote renewable energy, impact of energy transition on international energy markets, design of various energy markets (in particular electricity, hydrogen, heat) in relation to the societal objective of reaching zero-carbon systems, impact of climate-related risks on investments and finance, interaction between emissions trading schemes and other environmental policy measures, economic regulation of transmission and distribution grids, and design of residential energy consumer markets.

The position is part of an ambitious government investment initiative in the Social Sciences and Humanities (www.sectorplan-ssh.nl), translated within the Faculty into the thematic interdisciplinary area of Energy as outlined in the Faculty’s Strategic Plan for 2021-2016.

We seek candidates who are committed to excellence in both research and education. You have a proven ability (or potential) to conduct high-quality, original research in areas of interest to the department, and you aim to publish your work in international top journals in the field of economics and business. You are also interested in doing multidisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary work. The research in our Faculty is concentrated in the FEB Research Institute (FEBRI). Within FEBRI, we conduct high-quality research and highly-value multidisciplinary.

You have good teaching skills and are interested in developing these further. You will contribute to courses in the BSc and MSc programs offered by the Department. This includes courses on the theme of Energy Transition and Climate Change, such as courses in the multidisciplinary Energy Minor. Specific educational tasks, which may involve executive teaching, will depend on the expertise and experience of the candidate. Moreover, you are involved in the supervision of bachelor and master theses.

Researchers in the department are active in several research themes, including corporate finance, asset pricing, corporate governance, financial history, corporate social responsibility, development finance, banking, insurance, health, ageing and pensions, econometrics, macroeconomics, behavioral and experimental economics, and industrial organization.

Requirements

We encourage you to apply if you have:

- a PhD degree in Economics or Econometrics
- research papers on topics related to the theme of energy transition and climate change
- the ability or potential to publish in top-tier international academic peer-reviewed journals
- a relevant international academic network
- excellent teaching skills: you are an enthusiastic and effective lecturer, have knowledge of empirical methods, didactics, and understanding of teaching and assessment methods
- a University Teaching Qualification or are willing to obtain this qualification
- organizational qualities and excellent communication skills; and
- good interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully work both individually and in a team.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 60 months.

Career track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are permanent positions subject to a tenure decision after eighteen months. Based on a positive evaluation after five years, you will be promoted to Associate Professor. During the appointment as a career track assistant professor, you will have 50% research time.

In accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities, we offer a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,974 to a maximum of € 5,439 gross per month (salary scale 11). In addition, you will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax treatment may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

We would like you to start by August/September 2023, but starting later can be discussed as well.
