Job description

This academic career track position focuses on furthering the development and application of novel approaches in artificial intelligence, such as generative AI and interpretable AI. These innovations are likely to revolutionize traffic and transportation science, and, as such, will contribute to solving key societal challenges in the CEG domain, including mitigation and adaptation to climate change, sustainable transportation in relation to increasing urbanization, electrification of transport, and resilience of transport networks.

The research and education that you will perform, and coordinate will have a strong methodological nature, based on system and network sciences, and on sensing, fusing, and assimilating large amounts of data and state-of-the-art techniques in machine learning and AI. Your research will lead to novel insights and tools that will find applications not only in the traffic and transport domain but also in other Civil Engineering research fields where sensing, big-data, and data-driven modeling play a vital role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct innovative research in the fields of machine learning, big data, and advanced AI.
  • Joint coordination of the AIM (AI for Mobility) Lab of Transport & Planning.
  • Actively seek collaborate with relevant T&P Labs.
  • Serve as the (co-) coordinator of the TU Delft DAILab XAIT.
  • Contribute to the MSc education of CEG, including the TTE (Traffic and Transportation Engineering) in the new Master program of CEG, and the interdisciplininairy master TIL.
  • Develop and execute courses and provide supervision to BSc and MSc students and PhD candidates.
  • Foster an inclusive learning environment where the diverse perspectives of all students are valued.

Requirements

Hold a PhD in a subject relevant to the position and demonstrate a strong affinity for relevant research subjects such as big data, machine learning, and advanced AI.

Find inspiration in collaborative work, both within the Transport & Planning department and with other CEG departments and TU Delft Faculties.

Have a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed, international scientific journals and possess a strong background in quantitative methodologies, modeling, and/or data sciences including be capable of applying methodological skills to a range of problems.

Exhibit inspiring teaching skills and an excellent command of the English language and be able and willing to teach to a diverse audience of CEG students at both the BSc and MSc levels.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position. During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available.

With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track.

You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
