Job description

Europe’s chemical industry must become more sustainable – and it must do so quickly. Breakthrough technologies can help to accelerate this goal. At the moment, chemical manufacturing is held back by the limited number of enzyme classes in industrial use even though some enzymes are known to offer greener, safer and less energy demanding benefits. For this reason, the European Innovation Council has funded a new Pathfinder Open project. The W-BioCat project targets an important enzyme class of tungsten-containing enzymes (W-enzymes), which catalyse amazing chemical reactions involving challenging low redox potential reduction reactions that are currently impossible to obtain economically at an industrial scale. Its goal? To functionally express W-enzymes in an industrial workhorse microorganism. This would be a major breakthrough for science and the applications of this enzyme class in fragrance- and flavour compounds and cosmetic ingredients.

 

As a PhD student in Tungsten BioCatalysis, you’ll be joining TU Delft’s W-BioCat team to help reach this goal. Here, you will uncover the biocatalytic potential of W-enzymes under the supervision of Dr. Caroline Paul [add link https://www.tudelft.nl/tnw/over-faculteit/afdelingen/biotechnology/research-sections/biocatalysis/caroline-paul-group] and prof. dr. Frank Hollmann [add link https://www.tudelft.nl/tnw/over-faculteit/afdelingen/biotechnology/research-sections/biocatalysis/frank-hollmann-group]. The focus of your research will be exploring the synthetic potential of nature’s catalysts, with an emphasis on the development of non-natural enzymatic reactions for applications in organic chemistry. Alongside world-leading scientists and a collaborative team of ambitious peers in our Department of Biotechnology in Delft, you will search for novel W-enzymes and activities. Novel enzymes, an upcoming growth area in science, are expected to make a major contribution as catalysts. In this role you can therefore really make an impact as you help to future-proof the chemical industry with cleaner, greener alternatives.

You also have:

  • An MSc degree in (Bio)Chemistry, Biocatalysis, or a related field.
  • Experience in (bio)organic chemistry.
  • Sound knowledge of organic chemistry and biocatalysis.

 

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that you can interact well with others, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, write scientific articles and a final thesis and share your research results with a wider audience. Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4.

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.
