Job description

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a talented and passionate Mid-Career Researcher in the field of Environmental Humanities, with a particular focus on, and proven track record in, applying transoceanic perspectives. The researcher will be able and keen to contribute to and strengthen the KITLV’s overall research portfolios and agendas through publishing, organizing events, and applying for a multi-year research grant.

The Mid-Career Researcher will develop her/his own research in line with one or more of the KITLV research clusters:
  • State, Violence and Citizenship;
  • Mobility and Belonging;
  • Climate Governance.

What do we offer?
The KITLV strives for developing inter/transdisciplinary research approaches to identify blind spots, develop critical theory, and bridge the current knowledge gaps in Environmental and Humanities research through connecting different geographies and research networks including with civil society organizations, artists networks, and national and regional think tanks. Placing past and present-day thematic challenges, such as migration, climate and environmental governance, reparations, within the wider context of asymmetrical power relations and decolonization debates, we seek to develop transdisciplinary and transboundary research networks in the Indian Ocean and wider trans-Atlantic Worlds.

Contigent on successful application for (a) multi-year grant(s), this position will become tenured. Criteria will be specified.

Where is your workplace?
KITLV is located at Reuvensplaats 2 in Leiden. We are within walking distance of the Central station. It is possible to work from home (up to 50% of your contractual hours), though we like to stimulate academic exchanges in person.

Requirements

What will you bring to the table?

A succesful candidate has the following qualifications:
  • A PhD in the Humanities;
  • Research experience and strong track record in the field of the humanities or social sciences, on and in Southeast Asia and/or the Greater Caribbean;
  • Extensive research networks in the Netherlands and abroad including countries in the Global South;
  • Strong track record of peer reviewed publications in highly reputable international journals;
  • Team player with strong affinity to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural (research) team;
  • Preferably has affinity with transdisciplinary approaches and/or new research methods in audiovisual media;
  • Preferably speaks and reads at least one local language in either Southeast Asia or the Caribbean.

Conditions of employment

Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is 4,332 and the maximum salary is 4,929 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 11 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.

The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions. For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).

Please note that, in order to work for KNAW, it is required to be a resident in The Netherlands and have a valid residence and workpermit. If you do not currently have a residence permit, we will apply for the permit for you. We do not offer support in finding housing and other immigration matters, but there is a possibility for a remuneration of your moving costs (or excess checked in luggage).
