Job description

You will work at the department of Sociology, which has strong research traditions in social inequality, crime, migration and integration, social networks, cooperative relationships, families and work and computational sociology.

Your job
The position contains a standard combination of teaching activities (60%) and research activities (40%). In case you wish to focus your career on teaching, a 70% teaching and 30% research appointment is also possible. In terms of research, we are looking for a candidate with a strong track record in research on diversity, migration and integration, discrimination, polarisation, or policy research. The research should also connect to the UU strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies. The prospective candidate should also be broadly deployable in our teaching programmes. Ideally, you demonstrably care about outreach and societal impact.

The assistant professor works at the Department of Sociology. It is part of the Dutch research school ICS. We teach a bachelor programme in sociology and two master programmes: the one-year programme: “Sociology: Contemporary Social Problems”, and a two-year programme “Sociology and Social Research”. The department is further known for its sense of community. People enjoy coming to the office.

We are searching for an enthusiastic colleague who recognises themselves in the above values and meets the requirements below:
  • You hold (or have nearly obtained) a PhD degree in Sociology or a closely related field.
  • You have an inspiring research agenda in one of the following areas: diversity, migration and integration, discrimination, polarisation, or policy research;
  • You have considerable quantitative research skills visible from your PhD and publications.
  • You have scientific creativity and productivity, as evident in recent publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills, and are able to inspire colleagues to make a team effort.
  • You have experience in academic teaching, ideally including experience in co-developing and co-coordinating academic courses, or have the ability to learn this.
  • You hold a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are willing to acquire this qualification in the near future.
  • Your English is fluent in speaking and writing at an academic level.
  • You are able to teach in Dutch.

Please note that you may be considered for this position also when you hold most of these qualifications already, but need some time to develop others further.

Conditions of employment

We offer:
  • an employment contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent employment contract;
  • a working week of 32 - 40 hours and a gross monthly salary between €4,332 and €5,929 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU);
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
