Job description

Are you a highly motivated researcher with a keen interest in the intricate dynamics of Antarctic tourism management? Do you possess a PhD in economics or interdisciplinary studies, along with demonstrable expertise in modelling and simulation? If so, an exciting opportunity awaits you!

Join the collaborative efforts of the Earth Systems and Global Change group (ESC) and the Environmental Policy group (ENP) at Wageningen University and Research (WUR) as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the innovative PROACT research program.

As part of the NWO-funded initiative, you will delve into the complexities of Antarctic tourism governance. Your mission? Designing and modelling a cutting-edge system of tradable visitation permits for Antarctic tourism, aiming to address the challenges posed by tourism growth while leveraging the unique value that Antarctica holds for visitors. Budget is available for fieldwork in Antarctica.

Key Responsibilities:
  • explore the viability of tradable visitation permits for Antarctica, strategizing on cap implementation and fee collection to fund environmental preservation and scientific research.
  • conduct systematic assessments of available options, from cap establishment to permit allocation and trade mechanisms.
  • utilize advanced modelling and simulation techniques to test and evaluate various permit systems in the Antarctic context.
  • collaborate closely with international experts, policy officers, and stakeholders to develop concrete, science-based proposals for Antarctic tourism management.

The project is embedded in the Earth Systems and Global Change group (ESC) and the Environmental Policy group (ENP) of Wageningen University. You will be supervised by Bas Amelung, Assistant Professor (ESC) and Machiel Lamers, Assistant Professor (ENP).

Requirements

You have:
  • a PhD in economics or interdisciplinary studies.
  • proven experience in modelling and simulation.
  • strong research methodology skills and proficiency in scientific writing.
  • passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and tackling complex societal challenges.
  • fascination with human activities and regulatory frameworks in the Antarctic environment;
  • fluency in English language.

In our international working environment, there is an increasing amount of communication in English. For this position it is about language level C1. If you do not yet have this level, we will of course help you and you can go to our language center Wageningen in'to Language.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between € 3.226 and € 5.090 for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 10). Initially, we offer you a one-year contract, which will then be extended to the duration of the project if there is mutual enthusiasm.
