Job description

The Spanish capacity group is looking for a candidate to teach on the BA Spanish and various Language Master’s programmes. The candidate has expertise in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language.

What are you going to do?
The University of Amsterdam is seeking an outstanding Lecturer (Docent 3) who can make a substantial contribution to our Spanish programme through development and delivery of top-quality language acquisition and other courses related to your area of PhD/research expertise. Your duties will also include supervising student theses, contributing to innovations and improvements of the curriculum, departmental committee work, and related support duties such as the mentoring of students. We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates qualified and equipped to design and implement an updated L2 language acquisition programme for Spanish.

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Teaching Spanish language acquisition and other Spanish courses within the Bachelor and Master’s programmes;
  • supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses;
  • identifying opportunities for and contributing to the improvement of teaching and learning;
  • keeping up-to-date with relevant professional literature in order to integrate new research insights into teaching the designated curriculum;
  • performing management duties;
  • participating in committees and working groups, and performing administrative duties.

What do you have to offer?
You will be a demonstrably effective and innovative language educator and an excellent team player. Innovation in language acquisition courses, clear evidence of success in course design and commendable student attainment will make you eligible for promotion to Lecturer 2 in due course, provided you meet the internal promotion criteria.

Your experience and profile:
  • PhD in in Hispanic Studies (linguistics, literature, media studies, film studies, history, translation, language acquisition, etc.);
  • experience teaching on BA and MA programmes at an academic level, as well as Spanish language acquisition courses;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic teaching and learning;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities organised by the Spanish capacity group and the wider department of Modern Foreign Languages and Cultures;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • appropriate administrative experience and skills;
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained a UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your contract and obtain the qualification within three years of employment;
  • good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch, an active and passive command must be acquired within the first two years of employment and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed.

Candidates with substantial experience and qualifications in L2 language acquisition course design are particularly encouraged to apply, and there is a clear path for promotion to Lecturer 2 for candidates able to make contributions beyond classroom teaching itself. Experience with teaching/training candidates for teacher education will be an advantage.

What can we offer you?
We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30.4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 4,332 to € 5,929 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
