• Conducting literature and scoping studies on relevant topics, including: income and jobs for youth and women in Africa, access to basic services (including education and social protection) and/or political empowerment;
• Conducting case-studies on particular topics or countries. For this, travelling for fieldwork is a requirement.

• A Master’s degree in geography, development studies, African studies or other disciplines with a specialization that clearly indicates specialist academic knowledge with regard to development processes in Africa;
• An excellent command of English, fluency in French is an asset;
• Ability to get familiar with new topics quickly;
• Excellent academic and writing skills, visible in MA thesis or other written work (including non-academic work);
• The ability to work independently, and as part of a team;
• Willingness and availability for travels, including fieldwork.

We offer a position for a year starting 1 September 2019, with a possibility for a two year extension conditional upon performance. The appointment is in line with the collective employment agreement of Dutch universities. Salary range from €2709 to €4274 gross per month (pay scale 10). Depending on qualifications, the junior researcher may start at the appropriate step in scale 8 until he/she fully meets the requirements for scale 10, particularly with regard to research skills and the number of years of relevant work experience.

The African Studies Centre Leiden

The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. In addition, collecting and disseminating knowledge and information about Africa is an important task. The ASCL does this, among other things, by publishing books and articles and organizing seminars and conferences. The ASCL was founded in 1947 and has approx. 50 employees. It has an extensive library that is open to the general public. The ASCL is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University. INCLUDE was established by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June 2012. It brings together researchers from African countries and the Netherlands who work with the private sector, NGOs and governments to exchange information and ideas on how to achieve better research-policy linkages on inclusive development in Africa in particular in the field of productive employment, strategic actors for inclusive development and social protection. The knowledge platform is one of five knowledge platforms initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to contribute to knowledge and effective development policies in the Netherlands, other donor countries and developing countries.
