Job description

As an Assistant/Associate Professor your focus will be on the following tasks: 

Develop a new research line in the field of reliability of power electronics  systems. Power electronics systems are used increasingly in a wide range of application fields for energy transition such as renewable energy systems (solar, wind), electric vehicles and future grids but also for electric ships and aircrafts.  Reliable operation over the designed lifetime is essential for any power electronics system and the dependability on power electronics is becoming a prerequisite for system safety in several key areas, e.g., energy, or transportation. In terms of function and performance, their complexity grows. Depending on the application of a specific system, a number of stressors—e.g., high temperatures, temperature cycling, humidity, dust, vibration, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and radiation—can endanger the safe operation of its components. The large number of fragile elements in power electronics systems includes semiconductors, capacitors, magnetics controllers, sensors, and auxiliary devices. The failure of a single part causes downtime and maintenance cost. 

The research carried out will be disruptive and fundamental but with very broad application field. It constitutes good ground for high-impact dissemination and filing of intellectual property, setting TU Delft in leading. Young and ambitious researchers would find in an excellent engagement for developing scientific leadership and in TU Delft the ideal place where to nurture and protect personal development. Assessing reliability of single components is physics based (fundamental research) and spans across materials science, applied physics and electronics. Assessing reliability of sustainable energy systems requires application of reliability concepts from other fields. Reliability of power electronics in sustainable energy systems as novel discipline encompasses science-driven and industry-driven collaborations with other faculties, universities and industrial players.

Education: Contributions to teaching in the BSc Electrical Engineering programme and the MSc Electrical Sustainable Energy programme and Electrical Power Engineering, with a focus on power electronics.

Management: Acquisition and management of national and international research projects. Establishing strong collaborations with academic and industrial partners. 

Participation in international bodies such as IEEE. A holistic approach, in which design, implementation, deployment, and analysis are integrated, is strongly desired; we expect the applicant to actively collaborate with other researchers from academia and industry to realise this aim.

Requirements

You must have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering related to power electronics. Overall knowledge and experience with power semiconductor devices and experimental implementation of power electronic converters for sustainable energy systems (solar wind, electric mobility, grids) as well as previous work experience in one of these areas, is required. Previous experience with reliability studies is a plus. 

An excellent academic track record reflected by publications in the leading international journals is required. You should have a demonstrated ability to initiate and direct research projects and to obtain external funding. Experience in teaching and mentoring is considered an advantage. You also have an open personality and good communication skills. Demonstrated ability in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of the Dutch language is an advantage.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure.

At the start of the tenure-track, you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 4000 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.

The research in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy, headed by Professor Miro Zeman, is inspired by the technical, scientific and societal challenges originating from the transition towards a more sustainable society and focuses on three areas:

• DC Systems, Energy Conversion and Storage (DCE&S)

• Photovoltaic Materials and Devices (PVMD)

• Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG)

The Electrical Sustainable Energy Department provides expertise in each of these areas throughout the entire energy system chain. The department owns a large ESP laboratory assembling High Voltage testing, DC Grids testing environment and large RTDS that is actively used for real time simulation of future electrical power systems, AC and DC protection and wide area monitoring and protection.

The DCE&S group is responsible for research and education in the fields of DC systems, high voltage technology, energy storage, electronic power conversion (power electronics), electro-mechanics for electric mobility and recently electro-chemical conversion. The group is currently active in applications such as Direct Current distribution grids and microgrids, electrification of mobility (charging of electric vehicles), and renewable generation of electrical energy (such as wind and solar energy) as well as sustainable production of chemicals and fuels through large-scale conversion of renewable electricity into molecular bonds.
