The EngD is a postgraduate degree in the Netherlands and stands for Engineering Doctorate. The 2-year programme consists of lecturers, workshops and a technological design project. You perform the design project in and for an industry company. A great way to apply your theoretical knowledge in solving a real-life, complex design problem.

You combine learning and earning during the programme, because a EngD trainee is hired as an employee of the university and receives a salary. EngD graduates have excellent career opportunities, due to the high standards of the programme and the collaboration with industry companies.

4TU

The four universities of technology in the Netherlands are united in the 4TU.Federation: Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and University of Twente, Wageningen University and Research. 4TU connects the knowledge and expertise of these four universities of technology.

Collaboration 4TU with University of Groningen

The University of Groningen will start two Engineering Doctorate programs with effect from 1 September 2024. This will soon bring the total number of EngD programs and tracks to 20.

What is the difference between a EngD and a PhD?

  • The PhD has a duration of 4 years whereas the EngD has a duration of 2 years;
  • The PhD trainee is directly engaged with the university, the EngD trainee with the professional field;
  • The PhD focuses on scientific research, the EngD on technological designs.
