The
Behavioural Science Insitute (BSI) and the School of Psychology (PSY) invite applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology. As an Assistant or Associate Professor you will contribute to the
Social Development research programme (led by Toon Cillessen), the Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology (domain: Development and Mental Health), the Master's degree programme in Health Care Psychology (clinical Master's programme), and the Research Master's programme in Behavioural Science. You will also actively participate in management tasks of the programme.
In the Social Development programme, we concentrate on two closely related research lines. On the one hand, we conduct fundamental research on social and emotional development and related processes across the human life span. Taking a developmental perspective, we focus on social factors (e.g. parents and peers), individual factors (e.g. temperament, personality), and the interplay between the two. On the other hand, we conduct applied/clinical research on the causes and treatment of psychopathology in childhood and adolescence (including addiction, aggression, anxiety, depression, trauma). It is our ambition to contribute new knowledge to developmental science that is also relevant for clinical, developmental and educational practice.
We study caregiver-child interaction in early and middle childhood, peer relationships in middle childhood and adolescence, and social and romantic relationships later in life. We study typical and atypical populations (e.g. youth with externalising and internalising problems, children of traumatised parents). We combine sophisticated longitudinal and observational methods of developmental research with innovative methodologies. To test effectiveness and working mechanisms of treatment and interventions, we use randomised controlled trials and single case study designs.
Our methods include questionnaires, implicit measures, behavioural paradigms, psychophysiology and hormonal assessments (e.g. cortisol and cortison), neuropsychological paradigms, fMRI and EEG recordings, analysed statistically through sociometric analyses, sequential analyses, dynamic social network modelling, and advanced longitudinal data analyses (dynamic structural equation modelling, ecological momentary assessments).
The Behavioural Science Institute is a multidisciplinary institute for fundamental and applied behavioural research. BSI researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science, and communication science. BSI has seven research programmes covering three broad themes: 1) development and learning, 2) health and mental health, and 3) social processes and communication. BSI has state-of-the-art facilities in a new building.
The School of Psychology has approximately 1,800 students. The Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology is a lively international programme with a yearly admission of about 600 students. The Master's degree programme in Psychology has three specialisations that help to prepare students for an academic or professional career: Health Care Psychology; Work, Organisation and Health; and Behaviour Change. The School of Psychology offers Research Master's programmes in Behavioural Science (in association with BSI) and Cognitive Neuroscience (in association with the Donders Institute).
