Job description

We are looking for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology, specialising in Social Development. We are looking for a colleague who has interest in our current research and teaching, in which the normative developmental and developmental psychopathology perspectives are intertwined.
Most of our research covers early childhood to young adulthood. Our programme has a tradition of longitudinal research. One of our priorities is to continue our ongoing longitudinal studies. We are especially interested in a colleague who is able to collaborate on these projects. More broadly, you will contribute to our scientific output and the international visibility of our programme through publications and presentations. You will write grant applications in the spirit of team science together with others in the Social Development programme. You will be a mentor for PhD candidates. As our fundamental research has clear links with practice, there is also room for translational research.

We teach human development and developmental psychopathology at the Bachelor's and Master's degree levels. Your teaching experience and interests should fit in well with this mission. Ideally, we are looking for someone who can participate in clinical courses in the Bachelor's programme in Psychology (e.g. Conversational Skills Clinical Assessment/Psychodiagnostics) and the Master's programme in Health Care Psychology. Other courses are also possible (e.g. Introduction to Developmental Psychology; Social Development; Peer-related Processes in Developmental Psychopathology).

You will be expected to participate in management tasks, including committee memberships, programme evaluations, search committees, and recruitment activities.

Requirements

  • A PhD in developmental psychology, with a specialisation in social development, developmental psychopathology, child and adolescent clinical psychology, or a related field.
  • An excellent track record in developmental psychology, as evidenced by your publications and preferably also by grants or fellowships.
  • Experience with longitudinal research on development or the willingness to contribute to it.
  • Experience with various forms of teaching (such as lecturing, workgroup supervision, and thesis supervision at the Bachelor's and Master's levels) and course coordination. You are able to motivate and engage students in research and teaching.
  • Experience with knowledge dissemination and societal impact.
  • A University Teaching Qualification (BKO or equivalent) and experience with supervising PhD candidates.
  • You are a team player and will collaborate with colleagues in both research and teaching.
  • You are committed to open science and scientific integrity.
  • You are willing to participate in management tasks.
  • An excellent command of spoken and written Dutch (or the willingness to learn Dutch) and an excellent command of spoken and written English, preferably at Cambridge Proficiency level C1.
  • An academic attitude that is consistent with Radboud University's mission statement.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year, with the possibility of a permanent position following a positive evaluation.

  • Employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
  • Assistant Professor position: depending on your relevant experience and qualifications you will be appointed as Assistant Professor level 2 or 1 (salary scales 11-12). The maximum gross monthly salary is €5,826 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 12).
  • Associate Professor position: depending on your relevant experience and qualifications you will be appointed as Associate Professor level 2 or 1 (salary scales 13-14). The maximum gross monthly salary is €6,940 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 14).
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: 1 year, with the possibility of permanency following a positive evaluation.
  • The intended start date is 1 September 2021.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment  and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Have a look at our excellent employment conditions. They include a good work-life balance (among other things because of the excellent leave arrangements), opportunities for development and a great pension scheme.

Department

Faculty of Social Sciences

The Behavioural Science Insitute (BSI) and the School of Psychology (PSY) invite applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology. As an Assistant or Associate Professor you will contribute to the Social Development research programme (led by Toon Cillessen), the Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology (domain: Development and Mental Health), the Master's degree programme in Health Care Psychology (clinical Master's programme), and the Research Master's programme in Behavioural Science. You will also actively participate in management tasks of the programme.
In the Social Development programme, we concentrate on two closely related research lines. On the one hand, we conduct fundamental research on social and emotional development and related processes across the human life span. Taking a developmental perspective, we focus on social factors (e.g. parents and peers), individual factors (e.g. temperament, personality), and the interplay between the two. On the other hand, we conduct applied/clinical research on the causes and treatment of psychopathology in childhood and adolescence (including addiction, aggression, anxiety, depression, trauma). It is our ambition to contribute new knowledge to developmental science that is also relevant for clinical, developmental and educational practice.

We study caregiver-child interaction in early and middle childhood, peer relationships in middle childhood and adolescence, and social and romantic relationships later in life. We study typical and atypical populations (e.g. youth with externalising and internalising problems, children of traumatised parents). We combine sophisticated longitudinal and observational methods of developmental research with innovative methodologies. To test effectiveness and working mechanisms of treatment and interventions, we use randomised controlled trials and single case study designs.

Our methods include questionnaires, implicit measures, behavioural paradigms, psychophysiology and hormonal assessments (e.g. cortisol and cortison), neuropsychological paradigms, fMRI and EEG recordings, analysed statistically through sociometric analyses, sequential analyses, dynamic social network modelling, and advanced longitudinal data analyses (dynamic structural equation modelling, ecological momentary assessments).

The Behavioural Science Institute is a multidisciplinary institute for fundamental and applied behavioural research. BSI researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science, and communication science. BSI has seven research programmes covering three broad themes: 1) development and learning, 2) health and mental health, and 3) social processes and communication. BSI has state-of-the-art facilities in a new building.

The School of Psychology has approximately 1,800 students. The Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology is a lively international programme with a yearly admission of about 600 students. The Master's degree programme in Psychology has three specialisations that help to prepare students for an academic or professional career: Health Care Psychology; Work, Organisation and Health; and Behaviour Change. The School of Psychology offers Research Master's programmes in Behavioural Science (in association with BSI) and Cognitive Neuroscience (in association with the Donders Institute).
