Job description

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in Amsterdam is a Comprehensive Cancer Centre combining a hospital and research laboratories in a single independent organization. The research group of Remond Fijneman is part of the Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology group. Our studies focus on identification, validation and implementation of biomarkers for colorectal cancer. We are looking for a bioinformatician (postdoc) in the field of translational gastrointestinal oncology.

Project
Structural Variants (SVs, chromosomal rearrangements) are highly prevalent in colorectal cancer (CRC) and affect gene function. We aim to detect SVs in recurrently affected genes by using Cergentis’ FFPE-TLC technology and investigate the prevalence and impact of SVs in colon tumor development.

Your tasks involve the bioinformatics analysis of NGS DNA and RNA sequencing data to characterize SVs in CRC pathogenesis, publishing scientific research, interacting in a multidisciplinary team at the interface of basic and translational research.

We are looking for a postdoc bioinformatician with experience in NGS data analysis, who has the ability and motivation to perform basic and translational research in a multidisciplinary setting.

Requirements: 

  • A PhD degree in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology
  • A strong interest in biomedical research and translational oncology 
  • Able to write bioinformatics workflows using Python and R
  • Good communication and academic writing skills

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: The appointment will initially be for a period of 1 year with the possibility of extension.

Compensation

The appointment will initially be for a period of 1 year with the possibility of extension. The gross salary per month will range from € 3.695 € 4.391 depending on your previous work experience. The terms of employment will be in accordance with FWG 55 of the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals).

Your travel expenses will be reimbursed at € 0,08 per km (with a maximum of 30km single-way) which can be completed until € 0,19 per km at the end of the year by using our MKA-ruling – Flexible Employment Benefit. Free parking at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek is also part of the package. Personnel is stimulated to use public transport and bicycle and therefore we offer an interesting arrangement for bikers and/or discount on the NS-business card. As employer we contribute to 50% of your retirement at the Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn and provide a collective discount at the health insurance IZZ and Zilveren Kruis and insurance for incapability for work.

Team
The Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology group is a multidisciplinary team consisting of molecular biologists, clinicians, bioinformaticians, data stewards and wet-lab technicians. The project is lead by Remond Fijneman (https://www.nki.nl/research/research-groups/remond-fijneman/) in close collaboration with Sanne Abeln (VU University, Amsterdam) and the company Cergentis (Utrecht, the Netherlands). This position is a shared position with the VU University.
