Job description

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the development, validation and application of serological assays to understand epidemiology and spread of viruses in the human and animal populations. The focus will be on mosquito borne viruses, such as West Nile virus and Sindbis virus, and their detection and spread in humans and wild birds.

You will be working on national and international disease X and mosquito borne disease projects, such as the VEO project and ID-alert project . As a member of the Public Health Virology group you will also be part of the WHO collaborating center for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research

Requirements

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experience in Virology, and a strong interest in Public Health. We require:
  • A PhD from an accredited academic program in Biology, Biomedical or Molecular Sciences, Immunology, or (veterinary) Medicine, Health Sciences, and/or International Public Health.
  • Ability to perform independent research, particularly in developing and validating novel serological and immunological assays.
  • Good social and communication skills; excellent scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong team player, organisational experience and skills.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Dedication and enthusiasm for innovative research, combined with scientific curiosity.

Conditions of employment

  • The position is a 2-year fixed term contract, starting as soon as possible.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 5.088,- (scale 10), depending on your level of education and experience.
  • Excellent secondary conditions, such as a 13th month (extra salary) already paid in November and a personal budget for travel expenses.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We cover around 2/3 of the monthly contribution.

The Department of Viroscience is a large department which employs over 150 staff of different disciplines and runs an extensive research program on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of infections by human and animal viruses. All necessary equipment to carry out the research proposed in the projects is available within the setting of the department. The Department of Viroscience harbours well-equipped clinical and experimental virology labs, in which all the virology, molecular biology, pathology and immunology techniques necessary for these projects are operational.

You will be appointed to the Public Health Virology group of Prof. Marion Koopmans and Dr. Reina Sikkema.
