Job description

Are you passionate about the intersection of biology and computer science? Do you dream of developing cutting-edge methods and software tools to unlock the secrets of biological data? Then we have the perfect opportunity for you! The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) is seeking a talented bioinformatician to join our team.

What are you going to do?

At IBED, we are leading the way in ecological and evolutionary research, and we are increasingly exploring (meta)genomic and transcriptomic data to make groundbreaking discoveries about micro- and macro-organisms. As our bioinformatician, you will play a crucial role in guiding and supporting our scientists, postdocs, and PhD students in the bioinformatic analysis of their data. You will also be responsible for setting up, adapting, and evaluating existing software programs to ensure our team has the best possible tools at their disposal. In addition, you'll have the exciting opportunity to help design relevant course modules and teach undergraduate students.

You will be joining our newly established IBED Computational Support Team, working within the Laboratories & Infrastructure Unit that supports our four research departments. You will also collaborate with bioinformaticians from the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) at the University of Amsterdam Research Priority Area Systems Biology (www.systemsbiology.amsterdam), taking part in a vibrant community of like-minded researchers.

Requirements

We're looking for someone with a Masters or PhD in Bioinformatics, although BSc graduates with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply. You should have ample experience in analyzing (meta)genomic and (meta)transcriptomic data, with a strong knowledge of microbial physiology and biochemistry. Familiarity with population genetics and phylogenetics is also highly desirable. As an experienced programmer, you'll be proficient in Perl, Java, and/or Python, and R, with experience working in a Linux environment. Most importantly, you should be a great communicator and thrive in a multidisciplinary research team.

Conditions of employment

We offer a stimulating position in an exciting, internationally oriented, academic environment. Our employees enjoy a high degree of flexibility in working hours. Taking individual responsibility for the job and personal development are strongly encouraged by the University of Amsterdam.

The initial appointment (30-38 hours per week) is offered for a period of one year and will start as soon as possible. Upon a positive evaluation of your performance, you will subsequently be offered a permanent position.

The gross monthly salary will range from € 3,098 up to a maximum of € 4,257 (salary scale 9), based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications and on the number of years of relevant professional experience. Salary will be supplemented with an 8 % holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3 %. The UFO profile is Education & Research Officer 2. The Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities is applicable.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, please apply now.
