Job description

The Board of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) is recruiting a Professor of Practice in Corporate Valuation, M&A and Restructuring.

The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, has a strong focus on research. We are in the top 100 of several influential university ranking lists. The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) is one of the largest faculties of the University with approximately 7,000 students. It has a strong international reputation and is AACSB and EQUIS accredited.

Positioning and description of the chair
The chair is part of the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance (EEF). The new professor will teach and research in the area of corporate valuation, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and restructuring. The teaching will mainly be in the executive programs (Executive Master in M&A and Valuation (EMMAV) and Executive Programme in Corporate Restructuring) and partly in the pre-experience MSc (MSc in Finance or MSc in International Financial Management). The research will be in the area of valuation, M&A and restructuring. The professor will have extensive practical experience and a strong engagement with players in the M&A and valuation industry, including consulting firms, investment banks and private equity firms. This practical experience and engagement with the industry is important as it provides close links with the ongoing teaching and research on finance in the Department.

Teaching and research in corporate valuation focus on equipping students with the tools and knowledge needed to assess company value and value creation in various contexts, particularly throughout all the phases of an M&A process - from strategy to deal execution and merger integration - and in corporate restructuring. Curricula in this field cover valuation techniques such as discounted cash flow, comparable company analysis, precedent transactions, and leveraged buyouts, emphasizing their application to M&A deals and restructuring scenarios. Students learn to assess the impact of market conditions, capital structure, and synergies in corporate transactions. At the University of Groningen, executive education offers valuation and M&A education tailored to senior professionals, providing in-depth knowledge and skills related to real-world valuation and M&A issues. These programs focus on advanced topics such as valuation in complex corporate transactions, the role of valuation in corporate governance, and managing risk during restructuring. Research in corporate valuation explores the latest methodologies and challenges in valuing companies during M&A and restructuring processes, including valuation under the new Dutch restructuring tool WHOA. Relevant research topics include distressed asset valuation, post-merger integration, and the financial strategies involved in corporate turnarounds.

Responsibilities and duties
The position encompasses the regular duties of a professor in the areas of teaching, research and administration. The chair will have responsibilities in terms of education and research. The following are particularly important:

- As to teaching, the primary responsibility of the new professor is to contribute to the finance courses in two executive master programs (Executive Master in M&A and Valuation and Executive Programme in Corporate Restructuring) and the pre-experience MSc (either in MSc in Finance or MSc in International Financial Management), focusing on corporate valuation for major strategic decisions. The new professor will also supervise MSc theses.
- The professor will be a leader in the Faculty’s executive education programs and portfolio.
- The professor’s research activities will be in corporate finance, with an emphasis on corporate valuation, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring, and financing. The professor will also generate outside funding for research, preferably from private market sources.

Requirements

The candidate must possess the following:

- A relevant PhD, preferably in finance or economics.
- Excellent teaching abilities and experience in curriculum development, both in executive and pre-experience education. Ideally, the candidate has a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), or equivalent.
- Extensive work experience and networks in the national and/or international financial advisory and M&A industries.
- Broad and deep practical knowledge in the field of valuation, M&A and restructuring demonstrated by national and international practice-oriented publications. Academic publications in this field are recommended.

Conditions of employment

The chair is a part-time position at the level of full professor for 0.2 to 0.3 FTE. We offer a salary depending on qualifications and work experience, based on full-time equivalent, starting from € 6,099 (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 10,721 gross salary per month, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax treatment may apply to Non-Dutch applicants.
