Job description

The Challenge

We have a 1-year research position (with the possibility of extension) within a multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of materials science, mechanical engineering, and additive manufacturing. This role centers on the development, additive manufacturing, and experimental evaluation of shape memory alloys (SMAs)—such as NiTi-based systems—with an emphasis on microstructural control, phase transformation behavior, thermal properties, and functional performance. The candidate will investigate key characteristics such as austenite and martensite transformation temperatures, caloric effects, and mechanical response, and will contribute to the optimization of process parameters in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) to enable the fabrication of functionally graded, architected materials.

Requirements

  • We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and self-driven researcher.
  • You have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or another relevant science, engineering, or technology discipline.
  • You have Expertise in microstructural and mechanical characterization, including shape memory behavior, tensile and compression testing, and hardness measurements.
  • You are experienced with phase transformation temperature measurements and phase analysis techniques.
  • You are familiar with additive manufacturing techniques, particularly Laser Powder Bed Fusion.
  • You have the ability to think independently, develop creative and original work, and approach challenges with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • You are interested in working in an international and multidisciplinary research environment.
  • You have proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Conditions of employment

  • Interesting temporary research position in a dynamic and international environment, combining the benefits of academic research with a topic of high industrial relevance.
  • Excellent working conditions, an exciting scientific environment, and a green and lively campus with lots of sports facilities and an international scientific community. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO).
  • You will be appointed to a temporary full-time research position for 12 months. This position can be extended based on satisfactory performance evaluation.
  • Gross salary between € 2.901,- and € 3.707,- per month depending on experience and qualifications;
  • Excellent benefits include a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme.
  • You can make use of excellent facilities for professional and personal development and a training program in which you and your supervisor will make up a plan for additional suitable education and supervision.
  • You will receive good secondary conditions, in accordance with the collective labor agreement CAO-NU for Dutch universities.
  • We encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers, and other university staff.
