The AvatarZOO project investigates learning with emerging technologies involving extended reality. We focus on how, when, why, and who benefits from using these technologies. The goal of our work is to develop evidence-based knowledge that can enhance the learning effectiveness of when using these technologies. By guiding instructional designers to develop learning material more optimally, teachers to integrate lessons successfully, and clearly define targeted learning outcomes, we strive to explore the full potential and pitfalls of using emerging technologies in education. The AvatarZOO team is a multidisciplinary team.

As a model maker, you contribute to an innovative research environment, by using advanced technology, like AI and (serious) game design, to create and optimise 3D models for use in various downstream applications (Web, XR). Custom animation of the models is necessary to support dedicated human and animal movement patterns and to support the simulation of clinical procedures. You translate research innovations into visual patterns that support education. This means that you will also learn about current topics involved in educational research and innovation. In addition, you will be responsible for managing and versioning many models in various different projects.

• An employment contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent employment contract;
• a working week of 24- 32 hours and a gross monthly salary between €3,382 and €4,484 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 8 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
• 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
• a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

At the Department of Clinical Sciences, you will work alongside approximately 150 veterinarians and a similar number of support staff. Approximately two-thirds of the veterinarians are specialists in various disciplines; the remaining one-third consists of interns, residents and PhD students. Together we are responsible for the education of veterinary students, provision of clinical services to horses and companion animals, and both clinical and more fundamental research in the areas of regenerative medicine, locomotion, genetics and reproduction.

Anatomy & Physiology is part of the Clinical Sciences department. Our focus is on veterinary and life sciences education and research in the fields of anatomy, (patho)physiology, embryology, and stem cells and innovation of education using new technologies.

Our research and teaching work is inspired by the principles of the transition to animal-free innovation. We focus on better science (education and research) with fewer laboratory animals. We are part of the Ombion Centre for animal-free biomedical translation.
