Job description

You are a pediatric cardiologist with expertise in catheter interventions or a pediatric cardiologist in training wishing to become a top-interventionalist. You will be part of the largest catheter intervention program for congenital heart patients in the Netherlands, with approximately 400-450 pediatric and congenital heart catheterizations per year, and you will also take part in hybrid treatments. Additionally, you will be involved in the EP/ablation program for children.

Our innovative pediatric heart catheterization program offers treatments that are unique in the Netherlands. For example, we have a structured hybrid program in collaboration with our four congenital cardiothoracic surgeons. The standard repertoire of the team includes procedures such as ductus stents, PDA closure in premature infants, RVOT stents, and percutaneous valve implantations. The pediatric interventional cardiologists work closely with the department for adults with congenital heart defects; complex catheter interventions for adults are performed jointly.

As a pediatric interventional cardiologist, you will be part of a team of 12 highly motivated pediatric cardiologists with different areas of expertise, including (currently) three interventional pediatric cardiologists. In addition to heart catheterizations, you will also perform clinical and outpatient care for patients, participate in on-call services, supervision and teaching of residents and fellows.

Requirements

  • You are a pediatric cardiologist with expertise in catheter interventions, or a pediatric cardiologist in training with special interest in heart catheterization. Your expertise and ambitions are welcome.
  • You are committed to providing the best patient care and contributing to the development of the field and continuous improvement of care.
  • Preferably you speak Dutch or are willing to take an intensive language course to reach level B2+. This level is required in the Netherlands to work independently as a doctor. Erasmus MC facilitates participation in an intensive language course.

Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands. It is a young, dynamic global city that constantly reinvents itself at a rapid pace. Its ever-changing skyline is filled with bold architecture, and the people of Rotterdam have a "can do" mentality. It is a city of pioneers with courage and a drive to create change. The green surroundings of Rotterdam, combined with a good public transportation network, also offer the option to live in a quieter, rural setting. There is something for everyone. Beaches can be reached within 30 min. The city has its own airport and a fast train connection to Schiphol International Airport (26 minutes), as well as many international train connections. • Allowance for irregular services (+/-20%)
  • You can work both full-time and part-time. Together, we will discuss options. We value a good work-life balance.
  • Opportunities for development and education.
  • A 13th month salary, paid in November, and a personal travel budget. Furthermore holiday supplement.
  • A pension plan where we cover about two-thirds of the monthly contribution.
  • Sports facilities at Erasmus MC. And if you have a flat tire, our bike mechanic will be happy to fix it.

Employer

Erasmus MC

The department of pediatric cardiology is part of pediatrics within the Sophia Children's Hospital. The Sophia Children's Hospital is the largest and most comprehensive children's hospital in the Netherlands. We are a tertiary referral center for pediatric ECMO and the only center in the Netherlands performing heart transplants and VAD therapy for children.

Together with Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen, we form an alliance (the Heartcenter for Congenital Heart Disease), one team on two locations. You will thus work closely with the six pediatric cardiologists from the Radboud UMC. The interventional and surgical treatment of all our patients is carried out at the Sophia Children’s Hospital. This is the largest congenital program in the Netherlands, with:
  • > 290 heart catheterizations for children.
  • > 120 catheter interventions for adults with congenital heart defects.
  • Around 60 pediatric EP/ablations.
  • Around 380 congenital surgical procedures per year, of which 300 are in children.

For the multidisciplinary care of our patients, you will also work closely with various other specialties at Erasmus MC, among which:
  • Our four congenital thoracic surgeons.
  • Our pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesiologists.
  • Our medium care department of the pediatric chest center (20 beds).
  • Our pediatric ICU (6 beds dedicated to pediatric cardiac patients) and neonatal ICU (32 beds, the largest in the Netherlands).
  • Our adult congenital cardiologists.
  • Our ENT, pediatric pulmonology, and general surgical departments.
