Job description

We are looking for a Technical Support Officer for the research project Re/Presenting Europe: Popular Representations of Diversity and Belonging. This project, which is funded by the Dutch Research Council, focuses on positive examples of diversity and belonging in society and examines how they contribute to a sense of belonging across various minority communities in Europe. Our team focuses on sports and representations in art and culture.

Your job
The project emphasises “community curation,” in which members of the general public collect, share, and interpret the histories of their own families and communities. Two important ways this is achieved in this project are through our community digital archives in hip-hop and sports, as well as three podcast series. As a member of our team, you will offer technical support in the building and maintenance of both digital archives. You will also have the opportunity to work alongside researchers and social partners in the creation of podcast episodes and offer audio editing support.

As a technical support officer, your responsibilities are collecting, digitising and organising the relevant source materials for the digital archives and podcast episodes. You will ensure the timely publication of high-quality podcast episodes, as well as manage the data collected for these episodes. Your responsibilities also include guaranteeing that the collections gathered for the archives are organised in a practically feasible and sustainable manner and are made accessible to the public and researchers. You will work closely with the rest of the archiving team during the days when material is collected. Specifically, you will:
  • independently collect and organise relevant sources and archival materials in collaboration with researchers and social partners;
  • oversee the process of digitising archive material from a technical point of view;
  • manage the legalities that come with archiving material;
  • organise collected material and metadata into our archives websites;
  • edit podcast episodes and work on sound design, in collaboration with hosts (Rachel Gillett, Durwin Lynch, Bram Ieven);
  • manage planning, episode design, and coordination between hosts and guests.

Requirements

You identify with multiple of the following qualifications and experiences:
  • affinity with themes of diversity and inclusion, music and sports;
  • relevant education on mbo, hbo or wo level in digital humanities, archival or information sciences, or something comparable;
  • experience with organising and managing metadata;
  • experience in working with digital archiving techniques and systems and/or developing digital research infrastructure (or willingness to learn);
  • experience with relevant software for archiving: Omeka S;
  • experience with relevant software for audio editing: Audacity or Ableton;
  • knowledge of operating scanners, microphones, perk deck, cassette deck, VHS video recorder (or willingness to learn);
  • a good verbal and written command of the Dutch and English language (Papiamento is a bonus);
  • analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as good communication skills.

Conditions of employment

  • a job for 1 year, with the possibility of an extention after a positive evaluation until the end of the project, 31 August 2027;
  • a working week of 16 hours and a gross monthly salary between €3,537 and €4,383 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 9 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University has a number of schemes and facilities of its own for employees. This includes schemes facilitating professional development, leave schemes and schemes for sports and cultural activities. We also offer access to additional employee benefits through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage our employees to continue to invest in their growth.
