Job description

About the Project

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to an ongoing project on the design and manufacturing of adaptive winglets using Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) for aerospace applications. These smart winglets are designed to optimize aerodynamic performance by responding to temperature variations and incorporating active thermal control for real-time configuration adjustments. This hybrid passive-active system reduces the need for traditional mechanical components, enabling improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and supporting the aviation sector’s climate-neutral goals for 2050.

Your Role
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily focus on experimental research involving the manufacturing and characterization of SMA components. You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team from the UTwente, FIP, TU Delft, NLR, M2I, and other partners engaged in the design, processing, and testing of SMA-based parts.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience working with Shape Memory Alloys, preferably within the NiTi family, including post-processing and shape programming (e.g., one-way and two-way shape memory effects).
  • Demonstrated expertise in additive manufacturing of SMAs, ideally using the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) technique.
  • Proficiency in thermo-mechanical and microstructural characterization methods, such as DSC, SEM, EBSD, XRD, and other relevant analytical techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive, organized, and detail-oriented approach, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • A collaborative, creative, and problem-solving mindset.

Conditions of employment

  • A full-time appointment for two years (1 + 1 year contract).
  • A competitive salary ranging from €4.241to €5.538 gross per month, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus
  • A minimum of 29 vacation days per year
  • Participation in a solid pension scheme
  • Access to extensive professional and personal development programs
  • An inspiring and dynamic research environment within an internationally recognized university.

High Tech and Human Touch
