Job description

Are you a leading academic in pharmacology ready to strengthen and advance the teaching and research portfolio of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences? Join us as a full professor, contribute to cutting-edge pharmacological research, and inspire the next generation of pharmaceutical professionals in a vibrant, interdisciplinary academic environment.

Your job
Working in Pharmacology means contributing to better patient care and healthcare in general. As a team, we aim to improve the safety and effectiveness of existing therapies and develop preventive approaches. We also help to safeguard the quality, integrity and ethical standards of clinical drug development. Our societal impact is reflected in our involvement in public and professional discussions on the safety, pricing, accessibility and distribution of medication.

As a full professor in pharmacology, you will lead innovative research bridging fundamental pharmacological mechanisms with clinical and translational applications. You guide your research group and play an active role in shaping both the scientific and educational direction of our department. You are committed to teaching, using your expertise to bring core pharmacological concepts to life and to inspire students through research-based and active learning strategies.

In addition, you:
  • conduct innovative and internationally visible research in your area of expertise with scientific and societal impact;
  • secure external research funding at national and international levels;
  • contribute to and coordinate teaching in pharmacology at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD levels while leading curriculum innovation to enhance teaching and learning;
  • supervise PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and mentor junior faculty members;
  • strengthen collaborative links between pharmacology and related disciplines within the faculty and beyond, both with respect to research and education;
  • contribute to academic leadership and departmental strategy through active participation in faculty and departmental committees;
  • promote and lead by example in equality, diversity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and mentoring.

This position offers an approximate 50/50 balance between research and teaching. You will work in a collaborative academic environment with excellent research facilities and strong opportunities for interdisciplinary partnership.

You will be embedded in the Division of Pharmacology, part of the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), the renowned research centre of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Please note that we also have a position for a Full Professor in Immunopharmacology available within our division. We invite you to explore this additional opportunity. More information can be found on our website.

Requirements

You are an ambitious and collaborative academic with a solid foundation in both qualitative and quantitative approaches to pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Your international research experience ideally aligns with one or more of the following areas: Neuro- and psychopharmacology, Immunopharmacology, and/or Experimental pharmacology. Besides this, you bring the following qualifications:
  • a PhD in pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, or a closely related discipline;
  • recognised expertise in pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics;
  • a proven track record of securing external research funding;
  • substantial teaching experience in research-driven and active learning approaches;
  • demonstrated academic leadership, including mentoring early-career researchers and collaborating effectively within interdisciplinary teams;
  • proficiency in English (C1 level or higher). If you do not have a command of Dutch, we ask for a willingness to learn the language. Utrecht University will support you in this.

We know that excellent researchers take diverse career paths, and that not all strengths can be captured in a list. If you are excited about this role, bring relevant experience, and have a clear vision for your research, teaching and leadership, we encourage you to apply — even if you do not meet every single qualification.

Conditions of employment

  • An appointment as full professor, the chair will be subject to evaluation after five years;
  • a gross monthly salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – between €7,202 and €10,441 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale H2 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University also offers a range of its own schemes for employees. This includes arrangements for professional development, various types of leave, and options for sports and cultural activities. You can also tailor your employment conditions through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage you to keep investing in your personal and professional development.
