Job description

Are you a passionate and self-driven VR developer eager to make real societal impact? Join our UBeX lab at Eindhoven university for a challenging 10 months long project that shapes immersive virtual urban environments and games for cutting-edge education and research.

About the Lab
UBeX – Urban Behaviour eXtended Reality Lab – is part of the Department of Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). At UBeX, we design and develop 3D digital environments that simulate real-world urban streetscapes. These environments support research and education through immersive real-world experiments and serious games, contributing to urban policy and design innovation. See www.tue.nl/ubex.

About the job
UBeX is a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of researchers, designers, and developers. As a VR game developer, you will play a key role in translating conceptual ideas into interactive, immersive applications, working across the full development pipeline – from idea to execution.

This is a temporary position with the duration of 10 months.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement VR user interfaces and novel interaction mechanics in Unreal Engine.
  • Ensure seamless VR experiences across various headset platforms.
  • Maintain and iterate on existing VR applications and tools.
  • Document technical designs, interfaces, and key algorithms.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers, designers, and fellow developers. Proactively listen to the researchers’ needs, translate them into hands-on design ideas.
  • Estimate development time and ensure timely delivery of tasks.
  • Balance multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and adapt to changing needs.

Sustainability, in its broadest definition, is the cornerstone of research and education in the Department of Built Environment. We take the lead in (re)shaping the built environment to be future-proof, safe, healthy, inclusive and respectful of planetary boundaries. We house the entire spectrum of technology, engineering, design, and human behavior disciplines in the built environment, with world-class experimental facilities at all scales. This allows us to address societal challenges from a uniquely integrated perspective.

Requirements

Mandatory
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Game Development, Computer Science, Industrial design or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine; strong skills in C++ and Blueprint visual scripting.
  • Experience with 3D modelling software and assets integration (e.g., Blender, 3ds Max.)
  • Experience with version control systems (Git).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research-driven environment.
  • Ability to independently translate technical designs into implementation, in accordance with standards and guidelines.
  • Good communication skills in English (spoken and written), proactive attitude.

Preferred
  • Experience developing VR applications for different headsets and platforms (e.g., OpenXR , Oculus SDK, SteamVR.)
  • Experience with urban simulation, digital twins, or serious games
  • Experience with UI/UX design for immersive applications
  • Interest in urban design, behavioral research, or spatial analysis

If you are concerned that you don’t meet all the requirements sufficiently, but the job excites you, then please respond, but be sure to explain why you think you are fit for the job.
