Job description

The convergence of different semiconductor technologies, advanced materials, and innovative packaging is opening new frontiers in chip design, manufacturing and applications. Heterogeneous integration—combining, e.g., photonics, electronics, antennas, and/or MEMS at wafer scale—enables breakthroughs in energy efficiency, and bandwidth for next-generation systems based on chips. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and lead research in advanced integration technologies and their applications, shaping the future of semiconductor miniaturization and high-performance systems.

Information
As an Assistant Professor, you will:
  • Develop research on wafer-scale integration architectures for 2.5D and 3D chips to enable heterogeneous systems, with a link to integrated photonics.
  • Explore techniques for integrating various new and existing semiconductor technologies and/or materials with each other.
  • Investigate the integration of functional components for novel thermal, optical, electronic, and mechanical properties at micro and nanoscale.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to architect new forms of integrated systems, enabling miniaturization and cost reduction.
  • Contribute to TU/e’s educational mission by teaching MSc courses and developing new modules on More-than-Moore technologies.
  • Supervise PhD, MSc, and BSc students and integrate challenge-based learning into teaching.
  • Acquire research funding from national and European programs (e.g., NWO, Horizon Europe, ERC) and industry collaborations.

In this role, you will contribute to the ambition of the Beethoven program to educate top talent and strengthen research across the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Requirements

The ideal candidate:
  • Holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
  • Has expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Wafer-scale integration architectures and/or technologies for heterogeneous systems on chip.
    • Integration of various semiconductor technologies, including photonics, electronics and/or MEMS.
    • Design paradigms spanning combinations of semicon technologies such as III-V, silicon, memristor, and nano-mechanics.
    • Functional (meta)materials for improved and useful properties at micro/nanoscale.
  • Demonstrates strong research potential and ability to operate in a multidisciplinary environment and to motivate researchers.
  • Shows affinity with teaching and will commit to obtain the University Teaching Qualification.
  • Has motivation to secure research funding and build collaborations with industry and academia.
  • Possesses excellent communication and organizational skills.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:
  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. For a junior Assistant Professor this is (scale 11) min. € 4,728 max. € 6,433 gross per month (on a full-time basis).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • A dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • A Development Track with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. If you have a more senior profile, a tailor-made career proposal will be considered.
  • High-quality training programs for academic leadership and teaching.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) and partner career support.
