Job description

The project 'The social brain in very young children' is embedded in the unique and excellent infrastructure of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. The Donders Institute offers a fully equipped baby lab with EEG/ERP, eye-tracking and NIRS facilities. For this project, there is a close collaboration with Karakter Child and Adolescent Psychiatry that offers clinical services for children with developmental disorders and is involved in the community screening.

The further infrastructure of the Donders Institute includes three 3 Tesla MRI systems, MR-compatible systems for recording EEG and peripheral psychophysiological measures, access to a 7 T MRI system in Germany, a 275-channel MEG system, an EEG-TMS laboratory, and state-of-the-art computational facilities.

The Donders Institute furthermore provides a unique and stimulating learning environment for young researchers, including a high-profile graduate school and in-house methodological expert courses. Research into memory, emotions, and stress-related disorders are an important focus area at Radboud university medical center. Researchers working on this theme jointly organize regular discussion meetings and lectures to promote integration of research conducted within molecular, cellular, systems, behavioral, and clinical neurosciences across campus.

The project will be supervised by Professor Jan Buitelaar, Dr. Iris Servatius and Professor Sabine Hunnius.

Requirements

We are seeking talented early stage researchers wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in the field of developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

The candidates have to meet (and provide proof that they meet) the following MSC-ITN criteria:
  • Mobility Rule: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country where the position is based for more than 12 months in the last 3 years (short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account);
  • Early Stage Researcher: Candidates are in the first four years of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • The candidate must have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in cognitive neuroscience, or an adjacent field (psychological, biological, biomedical, or computer sciences.
Further requirements:
  • Experience in EEG/ERP and eye-tracking design, acquisition, and analyses, including the use of Matlab;
  • Experience in working with very young children;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Fluency in written and spoken Dutch is preferred.
We also want you to demonstrate the following competences:
  • Capacity to participate in an interdisciplinary and translational research environment and to connect with different people, with different backgrounds and even different cultures;
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate and communicate in academia;
  • A proactive and goal-directed attitude and good organizational skills, also to effective organize your own work;
  • Ability to perform during stress and a great amount of perseverance.
We expected you to prepare, submit and publish the results of the project in 4 or more peer-reviewed papers and synthesize the work in a PhD thesis to be defended at Radboud University in Nijmegen.

Conditions of employment

  • The contract will be for 3 years. Depending on progress and circumstances, an extension for a fourth year may be discussed;
  • The gross starting salary amounts to € 2.357 per month in the first year, plus additional vacation bonus (8% per year) and end of year payments (8.3% per year), and allowances as specified in the EU Marie-Curie programme;
  • The start date for this position is at September 1, 2019 at latest;
  • Upon commencement of employment we require a certificate of conduct (Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag, VOG) and there will be, depending on the type of job, a screening based on the provided cv. Radboud university medical center's HR Department will apply for this certificate on your behalf.
