Job description

Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University has an opening for a Data Science Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. 

The Data Science Engineer will work with our research and development teams to architect, provision, and support scientific computing platforms, databases and data lakes, workflows and pipelines for data integration and analysis, user-facing applications, and end-to-end data flows. 

  • Collaboratively develop overall strategy and roadmap to establish a complete scientific computing environment for data science and artificial intelligence use cases.
  • Design, document, implement and manage appropriate DevOps Solutions
  • Collaborative design and implement ETL processes, including data acquisition, data integration, data quality testing, data indexing, and persistent access interfaces.
  • Evangelize and support communications around the architecture and technology stack and support efforts to facilitate buy-in and alignment prior and during implementation.

Requirements

Basic:

  • Extensive experience in development, operations and full stack implementations;
  • Extensive experience in coding using languages such as Java, Python, PHP, Rust, Scala;
  • Expertise using configuration management automation tools;
  • Experience with Git, GitHub, GitLab, and Docker;
  • Excellent English-language presentation, communication, and writing skills;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, a high degree of professionalism and the ability to design technology solutions for small organizations;
  • Ability to discuss with senior personnel regarding trade-offs, best practices, project management, accurate time estimates, and risk mitigation plans;
  • Familiarity with both Linux and Windows;
  • Broad interest in scientific research and in supporting the research process.

Preferred:

  • Implementation and tuning experience using cloud computing platforms and frameworks;
  • Hands on experience leading large-scale global data warehousing and analytics projects;
  • Experience in establishing and employing continuous integration practices and tools;
  • Implementation and tuning experience for Apache Hadoop/Spark, MapR, and OpenShift.

Conditions of employment

  • The duration of the appointment is 2 years, with the possibility of renewal;
  • 38 hours per week (less is possibility with a minimum of 30,4 hours a week);

  • The salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience between €3637 and a maximum of €4978 per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours/week);
