Tilburg University, Division library and IT Services (LIS) is looking for an enthusiastic colleague for the position of programmer for a four-year research project consortium involving knowledge institutions and corporate partners. The project runs in the department of Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences.

Job description

The position is part of an externally funded initiative that covers five projects as part of MindLabs (https://www.mind-labs.eu), a multi-party research and development initiative involving cognitive science and artificial intelligence. MindLabs is a collaboration between Tilburg University, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Intermediate Vocational Education (ROC) Tilburg, and industry. In the MindLabs initiative, human and artificial minds meet in virtual and mixed reality, serious games and learning, robotics and avatars, and language and data technologies.

The MindLabs research project consortium includes 1) predicting behavior using data science; 2) measuring neurophysiology in VR simulations, 3) developing virtual reality agents for education, 4) investigating decision making using serious games, 5) measuring learning and performance in simulations. The projects cover areas ranging from maintenance, logistics, aerospace prevention to education. All five scientific projects involve strong collaborations between knowledge institutions and industry.

Job description
The programmer will be involved in programming activities in all four projects. The successful candidate is able to prioritize programming tasks, and help out where helps is needed in writing code for data collection, data analysis, and ad hoc programming. The successful candidate is the central programming liaison with all project partners.

Requirements

  • A proactive, dynamic, and enthusiastic technical ambassador of the project consortium;
  • Excellent programming skills, preferably in languages such as Python, R, C# or Unity;
  • Experience with projects within academic environments and/or corporate environments;
  • Very good command of spoken English;
  • Result-oriented, creative, decisive, with networking and collaborative skills;
  • Excellent programming and technical skills including attention for detail and multitasking skills, able to keep overview;
  • A team player, able to work in an autonomous way and take initiative;
  • Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with various stakeholders.

Conditions of employment

The candidate will be employed at Tilburg University. We offer:

  • A full-time position whereby a 80% position is negotiable.
  • The positions will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as ICT developer 3 (ontwikkelaar 3). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 2.790,- and (maximally) € 4402,- per month (max  € 61.4734,-  all in per year). 
  • The start of the employment is negotiable, preferably soon after September 1, 2020.
  • Successful candidates receive a contract for four years.
  • Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment, such as a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually), an options model and reimbursement of moving expenses. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The University will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation.

The Library and IT Services (LIS) Division of University Services has as a mission to provide state-of-the-art information- and IT services for education and research and operational management of Tilburg University. In this regard LIS takes up the position of service provider and advisor. LIS is responsible for the physical and the digital library, the working environment, study landscapes, the IT-infrastructure (inclusive AV-facilities), the Brabant cultural heritage (Brabant-Collectie) and Univers (the independent university magazine). From this position LIS offers modern facilities in the field of information and communication technology, the scholarly information supply and modern services to support education and research. The Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence department (https://csai.nl/) at Tilburg University is part of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences. The department emphasizes innovative cutting-edge research in those areas of cognitive science that bring together psychological and computational theories and methodologies. The group is responsible for the Bachelor and the Master program Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence, is co-responsible for the university-wide data science Master program Data Science & Society, and is affiliated with the Jheronimous Academy of Data Science (http://www.jads.nlhttp://www.jads.nl).

Researchers in the Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence track have access to computer clusters, experimental lab facilities, and the virtual and mixed reality DAF Technology Lab and its sensing technologies (https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/campus/experiencing-virtual-reality/).
