Job description

FASoS is seeking several teaching assistants to contribute to teaching courses in the three BA programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Arts and Culture, Digital Society, and European Studies). There may also be teaching opportunities in courses within the programmes of the University College Maastricht and the Maastricht Science Programme. Based on our approach of problem-based learning, you will act as a tutor on courses that bring together perspectives from a wide range of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Additionally, you will contribute to the teaching of academic skills and methods, and take on the role of an academic mentor and thesis supervisor for BA students in the fields of European Studies, Arts and Culture, and/or Digital Society.

You will become a member of one of the five departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: Literature & Art, History, Philosophy, Politics, and Society Studies.

Your teaching and assessment activities will take all of your contract time.

Requirements

  • You have a Master’s degree in or closely related to one of the above-mentioned fields.
  • You have the ability to stimulate student learning and participation in group discussions and to be an inspiring and stimulating supervisor. Previous experience in working with innovative, interdisciplinary learning approaches and problem-based teaching methods are an asset.
  • The Faculty's primary language of instruction is English, thus an excellent command of English is a prerequisite (Cambridge English Proficiency, level C2, oral and written)
  • You are open to interdisciplinary work and are a team player.

Please note that as an early-career position without a research component, this position is not considered suitable for candidates who have a PhD or are currently working on a PhD thesis.
 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1+3 Years.

Initially, you are employed on a 1-year contract as teaching assistant (teacher level 4).  The first year will be a probation period and after a positive assessment the position will be extended for the remaining 3 years. The contract amounts to maximum 0.8fte to allow optimal scheduling and task assignment throughout the academic year

The job description consists of teaching and assessment activities. In order to be realistic about what we can offer you in terms of the job content, we would like to stipulate that this position is not suitable for people with serious research ambitions as this position doesn’t contain any research assignments.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a gross monthly salary of about €2.790,00 per month, scale level 10 (based on a full-time appointment). Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

The university’s relocation policy stipulates that you need to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If not already living in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs or an allowance for alternative housing. 

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave as well as a shared office space and a PC.
