Job description

The Amsterdam Centre for Tax Law (ACTL) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), is currently looking for a part-time Assistant-Professor in the field of Tax & Technology with a special focus on Distributed Ledger Technologies (including Blockchain) and their convergence with other technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

What are you going to do?

The Assistant-Professor will conduct  research as a member of the ACTL’s research project “Designing the tax system for a Cashless, Platform-based and Technology-driven society” (CPT Project) The CPT research project aims to provide a thorough analysis of how tax systems could be designed and structured for a society primarily based on Cashless Payment Methods, Online Platforms and Digital Technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain. This project is led by prof. Dennis Weber

The person hired for this position will be primarily responsible for: 

  • Conducting the research in the fields identified above and reporting about such research in academic publications; 
  • (Co-) Developing and carrying out specific research projects in collaboration with academics associated both inside and outside the law faculty and with external partners; 
  • Contributing pro-actively to the activities of the CPT Project; 
  • Engaging with stakeholders; 
  • Transferring the insights/outputs of the research to the society, which includes:  
    • Developing (tax law) education in the field of tax & technology, with a focus on Distributed Ledger Technologies (including Blockchain) and their convergence with other technologies such as AI; 
    • Being responsible for the organization of conferences and/or seminars on the research subjects; 
  • Supervising undergraduate, graduate/masters an Phd students writing academic thesis/dissertations research on the relevant research subjects at the UvA; 
  • Supervising undergraduate, masters and PhD students in any internship with regard to the research project and subjects; 
  • Promoting the visibility and impact of the research project and contributing to its societal impact; 
  • Pursuing funding opportunities for research and valorization of the research project, which includes searching for available grants and preparing the required documentation for making the relevant applications.

Requirements

What do we require?

The ideal candidate for this position would be a person who:  

  • Can show a track record or strong affinity with the research subjects (i.e. tax & technology and in particular, with AI, automated decision-making and/or the governance of data); 
  • Has a PhD in law; 
  • Has programming experience in Java; SQL, Javascript, C++, Python or other specific languages; 
  • Has a strong academic publication record, evidenced by several publications made in well-known international journals; 
  • Has a relevant network nationally and internationally; 
  • Works well in teams and is a strong communicator; 
  • Can show ability to build bridges between a variety of legal disciplines; 
  • Has experience working in interdisciplinary environments, and working with societal actors; 
  • Is proficient in English; preferably also in Dutch; 
  • Ideally, has a track-record in successful grant applications (science foundation programmes and otherwise).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 2 years.

We offer a varied and challenging job in an ambitious organization. The appointment is for 19 hours and initially temporary for the duration of two years with a view to permanent employment. The UFO profile applies to this position. The salary amounts to a minimum of €3.746 and a maximum of €5.826 gross per month based on full-time work (38 hours).

Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year Bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement (Cao) of Dutch Universities is applicable.
