The Faculty of Science, the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) is looking for two Associate or full Professors in Environmental Sciences

Job description

The Institute of Environmental Sciences Leiden (CML) has opened:

  • 1 senior staff position in research related to Industrial Ecology;
  • 1 senior staff position in research related to Environmental Biology.

We are looking for excellent candidates that either perform already at full professor level or are likely to grow to that level in a few years. At our institute we strive for a diverse community and we value inclusiveness. Therefore we would like to attract a diverse group of candidates in order to increase the chance of selecting associate / full professors that will make our institute even more diverse. We offer an attractive research and teaching environment, including scientific independence, a collaborative atmosphere, and the opportunity of a personal career-development track, including mentoring and support. We welcome applicants from outside academia that have a track record making them suitable for an academic career, and are open to help overcoming certain gaps in experience (e.g. in teaching). We offer a Dual Career Programme (DCP) to assist the life partners of new academic staff (on pay-roll) in finding employment in The Netherlands.

Key responsibilities
The candidate will perform research, contribute to the teaching tasks, and share other responsibilities of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML). Natural science methods such as quantitative assessments and system analytical approaches are CML’s core methodologies. CML aspires to be a global leader in strategic, natural science based research on the efficient and circular use of natural resources, safeguarding biodiversity and natural capital while maximizing well-being and keeping emissions of the economic system within planetary limits. Creating societal impact in support of a sustainability transition is at the heart of our research activities.

For CML’s research area in Industrial Ecology (IE) area we look for a candidate with a proven track record in one or more of the following areas: life cycle assessment, and/or material flow analysis, (environmental) input output analysis, and/or circular economy, environmental economics, and/or data science, artificial intelligence, and system analytical approaches supporting the understanding how to use materials and products in the most resource-efficient and circular way. Capabilities to bridge IE research with that of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) are and advantage.

For CML’s research area in Environmental Biology (EB), we look for a candidate with a proven track record in one or more of the following areas: ecosystem responses to global change, conservation biology, environmental toxicology, urban ecology,  and/or proven knowledge on e-DNA, biodiversity assessments, ecosystem services, remote sensing, and other approaches assessing the quality of ecosystems and natural capital. Capabilities to integrate EB research with that of the Leiden Green Cluster of Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, the Institute of Biology Leiden, and CML, are an advantage.

The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are driven by curiosity to expand fundamental knowledge and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2,300 staff and almost 5,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.

With over 130 staff including PhDs CML is one of the largest environmental research institutes in the Netherlands. CML is organized around two major research areas: ‘Industrial Ecology’ and ‘Environmental Biology’. This makes CML one of the few institutes covering both the circular, sustainable economic use of natural resources and natural capital, as well as assessing the environmental impacts of economic activities on natural resources, biodiversity and natural capital. CML leads educational programs including the MSc. Industrial Ecology (with TU Delft), the MSc. Governance of Sustainability (with the Leiden Institute of Public Administration), and a track Biodiversity and Sustainability in the MSc. Biology. At BSc level CML leads a Minor in Sustainability and teaches courses at Leiden University College and in the BSc. Biology. CML leads the Leiden University ‘Liveable Planet’ program in which various other Faculties participate. CML also leads the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability, in which the three universities combine their research on a circular economy. CML is hence an ideal place for executing interdisciplinary research from a strong monodisciplinary basis.
