The master’s programme of Global Health at Maastricht University focuses on the complexities of global health inequities in relation to technological innovation and social, political and economic change. The objective of this master’s is to equip students with the theoretical foundation, methodology and tools to function effectively in the challenging and diverse field of global health.

To strengthen our Global Health educational team, we are looking for a lecturer in the political economy of health. Our multidisciplinary approach to Global Health focuses on understanding how political and economic processes have shaped health and disease, and inequalities in health and disease throughout history. Rather than focusing on the behaviour of individuals, and individual responsibility, we highlight how this multidisciplinary approach is key in addressing those inequalities and in structurally improving global health. Interactions between these macro-level factors and the way they translate into the conditions in which people grow, live, and work ultimately affects individual health at local level. Examples drawn from the curriculum include the triangulation between climate change, poverty and human health, or how colonial patterns determine inclusion in society, thereby ultimately affecting health. Related to that, questions on how health knowledge and health knowledge dissemination are embedded in historical, political and economic structures are important starting points for addressing complex health issues.

We are looking for a colleague who shares this critical approach with us, and who is passionate about educating master’s students in this approach. Focal points in your own work related to the above might be how climate change impacts health through poverty, how (colonial) politics reproduce social (health) inequalities or discrimination, how globalization gives way to social entrepreneurship impacting health, or other spear points that dovetail with the rest of the Global Health team.

Key responsibilities:

• Tutoring/training in the different courses of the MSc Global Health curriculum;
• Course coordination;
• Updating/revising course content following the latest insights in the field;
• Lecturing.

Requirements:

• You hold a PhD in political economy, development studies, anthropology, sociology or a related field;
• You have teaching experience in active learning methods;
• You have experience with course building and revision;
• You are enthusiastic about collaborating across disciplinary boundaries;
• You are enthusiastic about working within an international GH consortium;
• You are a committed and inspiring teacher, with an inclusive approach to education and the ability to engage with a diverse community of MSc students;
• You are a clear communicator and team player and are willing to undertake organizational   duties;
• You possess (near) native proficiency in the English language;
• You have a University Teaching Qualification, or are willing to obtain it.

Fixed-term contract: 1 year, with the possibility of extension and permanent employment.

We offer you an initial appointment of 0.5 – 0.8 fte as lecturer (docent) for one year, with the possibility of extension and permanent employment.

Depending on experience and qualification, the maximum gross monthly salary is € 5.211,- in accordance with scale 11 (on a full-time basis).
