Job description

The Cybersecurity (CYS) group at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) conducts research in a range of cybersecurity topics, including, secure data analytics, cryptography, privacy, and network security. We aim to make the world a safer place as most of our activity and data move online.

We design, develop, and evaluate interdisciplinary solutions that combine all fields of computer sciences: artificial intelligence, systems, and theory. Examples include the development of deep learning methods that are immune to common side-channel defenses, machine learning algorithms that can operate on encrypted data in the cloud, detection and mitigation of large scale distributed denial of service attacks, and analysis of the latest security threats. We aim to publish our results at top conferences and journals, transfer our scientific know-how and technologies to students and our public and private partners in the field of cybersecurity, and have impact in the society and the research community.

The faculty positions are in the following areas:

1. Security of Artificial Intelligence:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that has transformed our society and has revolutionized many business sectors. However, as we increasingly rely on AI-based decisions, analytics, and insights, the externalities of errors, bias, and misconduct due to the use of AI can be devastating for the society, industry, and government. For this position, we are looking for candidates with expertise in AI, including machine learning (ML) and large-scale data analytics, in at least one of the following topics: adversarial ML (including proposing new attacks and defense mechanisms for data analytics and ML systems), robust ML immune to data poisoning or data manipulation with applications to cybersecurity, intelligent auditing of data-driven systems and applications, detection and prevention of leakage and exfiltration of sensitive and personal data.

2. Hardware Security:

Hardware is a critical component in every computational system. For this position, we are looking for candidates whose research activities focus on detecting and mitigating side-channel attacks, discovering and patching vulnerabilities in processors, hardware architectures, memory systems, Internet-of-things devices, embedded systems, cyber-physical systems (e.g., drones, autonomous vehicles), or sensors, developing techniques to fingerprint devices, developing AI and ML methods to improve hardware security.

3. System Security:

Computing systems are becoming increasingly complex. Secure administration, operation, patching, systems development and management are challenging tasks. For this position, we are looking for researchers with experience in discovering and analysing security threats in software and large-scale computational or networked systems. Focus areas include: operating systems security, software security, cloud security, Web security, discovery and patching vulnerabilities in software or distributed systems security, mobile systems security, large-scale attack detection and mitigation, cyber threat analysis and intelligence, critical infrastructure systems security, AI and ML methods to improve system security.

Successful candidates will contribute to the strengthening of collaborations within the TU Delft cybersecurity ecosystem, as well as with external (international) partners. In addition to furthering her or his own research portfolio, the candidate has the ambition to strengthen the collaboration among our faculty members of the cybersecurity group, and with related research groups, companies and government agencies

  • PhD degree in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, or related field
  • A portfolio of publications at conferences in the area of cybersecurity, such as, ACM CCS, USENIX Security, IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, NDSS, PETS, RAID, EuroS&P, CHES, or in the area of AI/ML or computer system, e.g., AAAI, ICWSM, WWW, ICML, NIPS, KDD, SOSP, OSDI, USENIX ATC, NSDI, SIGCOMM, IMC, Mobicom, MobiSys.
  • Passion for research, teaching, student mentoring, and collaboration with other researchers.
  • Strong science communication skills.

(Tenure Track) Assistant Professor is expected to participate in education, research, and administrative tasks in a 40:40:20 time share. Evaluation will be based on performance and achievements in research, education, and valorization (impact to society, industry, acquisition of research funding, technology transfer).

Evaluation will be based on performance and achievements in research, education, valorization (impact to society, industry, acquisition of research funding, technology transfer), leadership (organization of scientific meeting, high-profile/personal awards, research initiatives), and involvement in the organization (hiring committees, evaluation committees, department's vision, strategy, and planning).

 

 

Conditions of employment

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Besides the salary you also receive an annual holiday payment of 8% and an end of year bonus payment of 8.3%.   • Fulltime, salary scale 11-12: €3.807,-- to € 5.922,-- per month gross (assistant professor position)
  • Salary scale 13-14: € 5.275,-- to € 7.054,-- per month gross (associate professor position)

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives.
