Job description

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor in Sustainability Transitions. The position is established within the department Engineering Systems and Services (ESS), more specifically in the Energy and Industry (E&I) section, where the research on energy system integration, industry and energy transitions and circular economy takes place. 
The ESS department aims to contribute to the scholarly debate at the highest international level, and is rooted in both engineering and social sciences. It hosts energy system experts, industry (decarbonisation), mobility (passenger as well as freight) and ICT experts (cyber, distributed systems, IT architectures), as well as choice modelling and decision making scholars. This combination of expertise guarantees that the cross-sectoral and socio-technical characteristics of sustainability challenges are addressed, involving e.g. shift to a fully circular economy, carbon-neutral fuels, electric and automated mobility. 
A team of educational advisors and a first class (digital) infrastructure support all teaching activities at TPM. The position consists of teaching (60%), research (20%) and teaching related-management (20%). 
In this position you will:
- Contribute to teaching in the BSc and MSc programmes of the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management as well as in the MSc programme of Industrial Ecology, a joint programme in co-operation between Leiden University and Delft University of Technology;
- Supported by your colleagues, you will develop new courses in the field of sustainability;
- Supervise BSc and MSc graduation projects on themes related to your expertise;
- Perform research in the field of sustainability transitions;
- Contribute to the organization and management of education in the department.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with an interdisciplinary track record, who is able to integrate an engineering, environmental and social science perspective in the field of sustainable development. 
We expect you have an appreciation of scientific and engineering challenges of the sustainability transitions, preferably in combination with economic and/or policy analysis expertise or affinity. You have a proven background in an engineering or in a science domain demonstrated by a PhD degree in, for example, Industrial Ecology, Complex Systems Engineering and Management, Chemical Engineering or Physics, etc.;

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.

Faculty Technology, Policy and Management

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) contributes to sustainable solutions for technological challenges in society by combining the insights from engineering with the humanities and the social sciences. The assistant professor will be positioned in the Engineering Systems and Services (ESS) department. The core activity of the department is to model, understand, forecast, and shape emerging technological innovations and user patterns in the increasingly interconnected sectors of energy, industry, mobility and ICT; and use these insights for improved design, regulation and operation of such engineering systems. ESS aims to contribute to the scholarly debate at the highest international level, and is rooted in both engineering and social sciences. We provide excellent teaching based on our comprehensive systems engineering approach to international and national BSc and MSc students, professionals and via online educational resources (e.g. MOOCs). Teaching activities are supported by a team of educational advisors and a first class (digital) infrastructure.
