Job description

The section Public Administration in the Technology, Human and Institutional Behaviour (HIB)-department is currently seeking an assistant professor in the area of public sector transformations.

Contemporary processes of transformation are marked by a convergence of digital, biological and physical innovations that reshape state and society. Think of fundamental transformations in the production and consumption of energy and food, the provision of public safety or health care in new technological contexts. Such processes come with new challenges for governments and their administrative organization, particularly in the field of public service delivery. The public management of sectors and (semi-)public organizations will need to transform as well, to innovate public service delivery, to shape data-driven public sector performance, embed new technologies to serve citizens, and to stimulate professionals' motivation to work for transforming public sector organizations.

We seek a talented new colleague with a background in the broad field of public administration, who has an interest in, or experience with, the study of public management, public sector reforms, and innovations in public service delivery. This position is an exciting opportunity for co-developing and contributing to innovative public administration research. This position aims at generating new understanding of public sector reform and new kinds of public service delivery in a world of multiple transformations, based at a university of technology that puts innovations at the heart of its research and education. Next to developing research in the above-mentioned areas the position has teaching responsibilities in public administration, policy studies and/or (international) public governance in various educational programs of our faculty, including the BSc Management, Society & Technology, BSc Public Governance Across Borders, the MSc Public Administration and the MSc European Studies. Your challenge

You contribute to research, teaching, and knowledge valorisation. You will:
  • carry out research and publish in the exciting field of public sector transformations, within the section of Public Administration;
  • co-develop new research line that fits with multi-disciplinary (public administration, psychology and communication science) approach to transformations in public service delivery;
  • teach in, and contribute to furthers shaping the curriculim of, the bachelor and master programs of Public Administration (including European Studies), Communication Science and Psychology.   • expand your network and acquire external research funding;
  • contribute to our interdisciplinary research domains of resilience, emerging technologies and societal transformations, or health in the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social sciences (BMS);
  • develop and strengthen expertise in novel research methods.

Requirements

You have a strong interest and shown ability to collaborate in an academic, multidisciplinary environment and to achieve societal impact. A successful candidate will also demonstrate her or his intrinsic motivation and strong abilities for teaching, both lecturing and tutoring, designing and coordinating courses. Furthermore, we encourage you to apply if:
  • You have a PhD degree in in one of the relevant social sciences, typically in public administration, public policy, political science, organization studies, urban studies or European studies, preferably with an interest in psychology and/or communication science.
  • You have a passion for teaching and the ambition to become a creative teacher.
  • You have ability and ambition to work closely with public stakeholders.
  • You are interested in multidisciplinary approaches to public sector transformations;
  • You have strong abilities to an inspiring role as a public administration scholar in multi-disciplinary research;
  • Your are interested in contemporary innovations in public service delivery;
  • You are effective in acquiring external funding.
  • You have excellent communication skills and are a team player.
  • You are fluent in English. Knowledge of, or willingness to learn Dutch is an advantage.
  • You have a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) or equivalent, or are willing to acquire one within three years.

Conditions of employment

We offer a fulltime structural position, starting with a temporary appointment with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation. Our terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO). Depending on experience and qualifications, the gross monthly salary on a full-time basis ranges between € 3.974,- (scale 11) to € 6.181,- (scale 12) (the 30% tax ruling might be applicable). Additionally, the University of Twente offers attractive employment conditions such as:
  • an 8,3% end-of-year bonus and 8% holiday allowance;
  • an attractive solid pension scheme;
  • a minimum of 29 leave days in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A fulltime employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis;
