Job description

Are you a scientist with a keen interest in education, research and intelligent technologies? At the National Education Lab for Artificial Intelligence (NOLAI in Dutch), we develop innovative and intelligent technologies aimed at improving the quality of primary and secondary education. Over the next ten years, NOLAI teams up with schools, universities and companies to create new innovative examples of AI in education. As a postdoctoral researcher on ethical aspects of AI in education, you can contribute to NOLAI's goals in our scientific programme.

The new National Education Lab AI (NOLAI), located at Radboud University in the Netherlands, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to study the ethical and social implications of AI in education. You will be part of the ethics team in the lab's scientific programme.

The scientific programme supports the co-creation programme and creates the preconditions necessary for a successful dialogue between schools, scientists and companies that are discussing and developing AI in education. The aim of the scientific programme is to gain insight into the pedagogical, social and ethical consequences of intelligent innovations in education. It examines the opportunities and risks of intelligent technologies, based on the premise that AI can be a useful tool for teachers and students.

The scientific programme consists of four focus areas:

  1. Pedagogical-didactic principles of AI in education.
  2. Technical aspects of AI in education.
  3. Ethical aspects of AI in education.
  4. Technical infrastructure and data.

You will focus on the ethical aspects of AI in education and collaborate with the two other postdocs associated with the other focus areas and the NOLAI professors.

The ethics team will work closely with teachers in primary and secondary education, developers and edtech companies to think through the ethical and social implications of AI in education. The team will study existing Dutch and European ethical guidelines, principles and values using an ’embedded ethics’ approach. The goal is to integrate robust ethical considerations into the practical development of AI in education. The ethics team is led by Prof. Tamar Sharon and Dr Marthe Stevens, and will also include a PhD candidate.
