Job description

Our international research group is active in the field of the human microbiome, molecular diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance research. The lab has on-site (anaerobic) culturing, next-generation sequencing and various other molecular typing facilities.

The successful applicant will participate in several (inter)national research projects and work in close collaboration with other technicians, PhD students and senior scientists. In addition he/she will assist in practical courses and perform lab management tasks. You will play a constructive and responsible role in the daily management of the laboratory.

In particular you will:

  • support research projects
  • instruct and support PhD students and interns
  • ensure that equipment is in optimal working order
  • assist in practical courses

Requirements

For this function we are looking for candidates with:

  • a qualification in laboratory skills, i.e. Hoger Laboratorium Onderwijs or equivalent;
  • demonstrated hands-on experience with bacterial culturing and molecular microbiological techniques;
  • experience with next-generation sequencing is preferred;
  • experience with processing and analysis of (sequencing) data;
  • strong communication, organization and social skills; high competence in either English or Dutch (both are preferred);
  • team player with the ability to work independently;
  • strong motivation for scientific research.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 48 months.

Temporary employment for 4 years.

Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary between €2.471 and €3.336 (scale 7) for a full-time working week of 38 hours.
An 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance is also provided. In addition to good primary employment conditions, UM also offers an attractive package of secondary employment conditions.

Department

The Department of Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases (bacteriology, virology, serology, parasitology and mycology) and infection prevention, contributes in education and conducts scientific research.
The department has a strong reseaerch focus on the study of antimicrobial resistance, molecular typing and the human microbiome using both traditional culture-based approaches as well as advanced molecular analysis, including next-generation sequencing. Our research group, embedded within the research Schools NUTRIM and CAPHRI, has strong links with clinical departments (e.g. general surgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology and pulmonology) within the Maastricht UMC+ as well as the Municipal Health Service (GGD) and many (inter)national collaborations with academic and industrial partners within the context of multiple (inter)national consortia, including the Top Institute Food and Nutrition (TIFN), NWO-Carbohydrate Competence Center, Joint Programme Initiatives HDHL Intestinal Microbiomics and the Interreg i-4-1health project.
