We are looking for a Student assistant in Communication Science - Persuasive Communication (DCW3).

Are you interested to become a tutorial group teacher, specifically in the field of Persuasive Communication?

The Department of Communication Science is looking for student assistants.

We are seeking motivated student assistants for training second year BA students in writing an individual literature review paper, as part of the second year BA module Persuasive Communication (DCW3).

Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam concentrates on the production, uses, and consequences of information and communication in informing, persuading, and entertaining citizens. There are currently four program groups: Persuasive Communication, Political Communication & Journalism, Corporate Communication, and Entertainment Communication.

With more than 2400 undergraduate and graduate students, Communication Science is among the biggest departments at the University of Amsterdam. The College of Communication and the Graduate School of Communication offer a Bachelor and Master program, a European joint degree program in Journalism and a Research Master, the only of its kind in the Netherlands. The research is organized in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR. ASCoR hosts the Research Priority Area Communication of the UvA. Since 2018, Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam has been consistently ranked number 1 worldwide by Subject in the QS World University Rankings.

Tasks:
  • Teaching tutorial groups that focus on writing an individual literature review paper and applying persuasive communication knowledge to small practical cases;
  • Each week you will explain parts of the writing process (developing a research question, searching for literature in the UvA Digital Library, writing each section of the paper, applying APA rules for referencing). Weekly, the students prepare small assignments that will be discussed during the meeting;
  • Providing feedback on and grading of student papers, supervised by a senior lecturer;
  • Participating in weekly teacher meetings.
The tutorial groups will take place in the first eight teaching weeks of the first semester (Aug. 28 - Dec. 1, 2023). For every meeting, there will be an instruction for the student assistants, a teaching manual, and a PowerPoint. In the second half of November with some students having extended deadlines till the holidays, you will be asked to grade the resit papers of your group(s).

Requirements

The student assistant we are looking for:
  • is preferably a Master's student or Research Master's student Communication Science, third year bachelor students are allowed to apply;
  • is fluent in Dutch and/or English;
  • obtained good grades (especially for papers, such as the persuasive communication paper or BA thesis);
  • has a flexible schedule.

Conditions of employment

  • The position is temporary for a period from 28 August until 1 December 2023. Depending on the year of study, the salary range is €2402,- to €2611,- gross per month (Student Assistant salary grade, pursuant to the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) based on a full-time workweek.
