Help us develop the next generation of bioelectronic medicines!

Job description

Join our dynamic team at Delft University of Technology's Section Bioelectronics in the Department of Microelectronics! As a Bioelectronics Support Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in enabling groundbreaking neuroscientific research and the development of cutting-edge neurotechnology applications. In this position, you will actively support MSc and PhD students, as well as university staff, in designing and testing integrated circuits and microfabricated systems. By leveraging your expertise, you will contribute to the advancement of bioelectronic medicine, also known as electroceuticals. In particular, you will be involved with biomedical circuits and systems, flexible implants, microfabrication, microsystem integration, and wireless power transfer for neuromodulation, ultrasound stimulation, and large-scale bi-directional neural interfaces. Our section is at the forefront of research in these exciting fields.

Your responsibilities will encompass specifying, assembling, calibrating, and maintaining advanced packaging, measurement, and post-processing techniques and equipment. To excel in supporting bioelectronics research, you will develop specialized skills in encapsulation and packaging, post-processing of circuits and microfabricated systems, preparation of devices for in vitro and in vivo testing, and the creation of demonstrator prototypes.

You will be part of the vibrant environment of young researchers of the 10-year-long Dutch Brain Interface Initiative (DBI2) project, funded by the “Gravitation” programme of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. The project brings together a broad and diverse Dutch consortium with expertise in neuroscience, neurotechnology, and computer science to research brain interactions. We are specifically looking into understanding how each part, from neuron to brain region, interacts with the rest of the brain and with the outside world. This understanding, in turn, is expected to lead to better diagnosis and treatment options of brain disorders, such as blindness, paralysis, imsomnia, epilepsy, anxiety, etc.

As a support engineer you will:

  • Actively assist students and university staff with the design of circuits at the PCB level for the verification/testing of analog, digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits.
  • Plan and support the measurement and characterization of developed integrated circuits and microfabricated systems.
  • Assist in all necessary packaging and wire bond assembly of the implemented ICs and microfabricated systems.
  • Assist in post-processing, encapsulation and demonstration of bioelectronics circuits and systems, in collaboration with our neuroscience and neurotechnology partners in the NWO-funded project The Dutch Brain Interfaces Initiative.

Your skills include:

  • Ability to liaise and negotiate with vendors, contractors, and research scientists.
  • A strong team and learn-on-the-job mentality applied in a diverse international setting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and perform a variety of new techniques.
  • Proficiency in English in both written and oral communication.
  • Experience with PCB CAD tools such as Altium.
  • A multi-disciplinary mindset.

As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with top-notch researchers and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries. Join us in pushing the boundaries of bioelectronics and making a real impact in the field of neuroscientific research and neurotechnology applications.

Apply now to become part of our innovative and vibrant community, where your expertise will thrive and your contributions will shape the future of bioelectronics!

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
