Job description

The successful appointee will be an inspiring collaborative leader with a highly-regarded reputation in the economics or business administration research community. Together with the Faculty Board the Dean will be responsible for the Faculty’s teaching and research activities as well as for its operational management.

The successful appointee will have demonstrable ability to articulate a compelling vision for the Faculty that will also forge beneficial partnerships across the University, and beyond, thereby further enhancing the international reputation of the Faculty. S/he will be a visionary scientist with a strong international profile who has the experience and drive to develop and deliver the Faculty’s strategic plan together with the Faculty Board, Department Heads and Directors of Executive Education.

Requirements

With a proven track record as a senior leader and manager, the Dean will be experienced in education and research and will bring to the role a broad international network in science, public sector and industry. Experience working in the Dutch higher education environment, and fluency in the Dutch language, will be an advantage. A non-Dutch candidate should be willing to learn these skills as soon as possible. Fluency in English is essential.

Conditions of employment

The term of a Dean appointment is four years and can be renewed. The appointment is associated with a tenured Full Professor appointment in one of the Departments at the Faculty. Gross monthly salary extends to a maximum of € 9,174 (salary scale 18) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities. This appointment also comes with additional specific and attractive secondary terms of employment.

Department

The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration is one of the largest faculties at VU Amsterdam, accommodating approximately 4.000 bachelors and masters students and 1.800 executive students. The Faculty is ranked top-three in the Netherlands for output, with 10 staff members represented in the ESB Economists Top 40. With staff and students based across eight departments, the Faculty’s mission is to combine high quality education with world-leading research. These departments include: Accounting; Econometrics and Operations Research; Economics; Finance; Information, Logistics and Innovation; Management and Organisation; Marketing; and Spatial Economics.

The Faculty offers three Bachelor programmes in Dutch (Economy and Business Economics, Econometrics and Operational Research, and Business Administration), two English Bachelor programmes (International Business Administration and Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE)), and 7 English Master programmes, incorporating 21 specialisations covering the entire breadth of the economics and business administration domain. Several Master programmes are ranked as Top-programmes in the Netherlands. Executive Education is strongly rooted within the Faculty, offering 18 varied programmes for professionals.

Research covers the field of economics (including development economics, spatial economics, and finance), econometrics (including operations research), and business administration (including accounting, marketing, management and organization, information and logistics). Research is centred in the Tinbergen Institute (internationally accredited ‘world-class’) and the Amsterdam Business Research Institute with interdisciplinary research also carried out in over ten other research institutes and centres across the University.
