Job description:
The Laboratory of Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing at Wageningen University (NL) is offering a post-doc position to perform research on participatory monitoring in the context of forest management and land use (www.wageningenur.nl/cbm); with particular emphasis in activities for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). The focus of the work will be on an interactive forest monitoring systems building upon near-real time remote sensing data and community/local expert-acquired data on forest and land changes. Research involves developing techniques and implementing them in a series case studies in developing countries such as Peru, Ethiopia and Indonesia. The candidate is expected to spend significant time in the field and to work efficiently with local, national and regional partners. The candidate is also required to conduct regular capacity development for local data collection techniques and their integration with remote sensing data streams.
Resources and supervision:
The research is conducted mainly at the Laboratory of Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensingat Wageningen University (NL) and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Martin Herold in close collaboration with international partners.

Requirements

Requirements:
Motivated researcher with PhD degree and experiences in Computer Science, Quantitative Tropical Forest Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Technologies. Strong English skills are fundamental; knowledge in Spanish is helpful. A background in participatory monitoring, handheld technologies, time series remote sensing image analysis, and related data handling and programming skill is an essential asset. Knowledge about the tropical forests and the REDD process is very appreciated. Experiences and willingness to work with and in developing tropical countries, and organizing and conducting field work and leading capacity development in tropical forests is important.

Conditions of employment

We offer:
We offer a full-time position (38 hours) for 24 months. Maximum salary amounts € 4757,- a month (gross, scale 11). Salary depends on relevant experience and knowledge.
