The Leiden Institute of Physics, established as the first physics department in the Netherlands, has a long tradition of excellence in fundamental research with value for society. Its research spectrum encompasses ten research themes, ranging from cosmology to soft-condensed matter, from network theory to ultramicroscopy and from living systems to quantum optics. The institute fosters an international atmosphere with strong interactions among the various groups as well as with other departments at the Leiden Faculty of Science.

Within the framework of a newly created Quantum Software Consortium we collaborate with groups at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience at the Technical University Delft, the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) and the Institute of Physics at the University of Amsterdam. To strengthen this consortium we have an opening for a faculty position in experimental physics / tenure track.

The Leiden Institute of Physics invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. We are looking for an experimental physicist with the potential for running a world-recognized independent research program in the broadly defined area of quantum optics and information. Together with the current staff (s)he will help shape the future physics research program in Leiden. Gender balance is an explicit aim of our Institute.  Women are strongly encouraged to apply. You have a Ph.D. degree in physics and several years of experience at the postdoctoral level. You have demonstrated a strong interest in an academic career through your activities and publication record. You are a stimulating teacher who will take part in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. You are expected to be successful in acquiring research funds, and to contribute to the management and organization of the Institute. You are eager to play a pivotal role in the quantum software consortium. Furthermore, you have excellent communications skills in English, both written and verbal. You are expected to master the Dutch language in 2 years’ time.

Our Tenure track is expected to lead to a promotion to a tenured position as associate professor and eventually to grow into the role of a full professor. With our Tenure track we offer you a clear and inviting career path to support you in the development of your personal and professional talents. It has a strong focus on coaching and training. A special mentor program is offered with fellow Tenure Trackers in a peer group, in order to develop your academic leadership skills. 

We offer a 6 year term position, with the possibility of a tenure position based on performance. Salary range from €€ 3475 to €€ 4757 gross per month (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
